About the Lab

Professor Wook Jin's research lab specializes in musculoskeletal radiology, with a focus on advanced medical imaging techniques for diagnosing joint and soft tissue pathologies. The lab investigates the diagnostic accuracy of ultrasound and magnetic resonance arthrography in identifying labral tears, particularly in the shoulder and hip, and explores the sonographic features of complex soft tissue lesions such as ruptured epidermal cysts, organizing hematomas, and pseudocysts in the humeral head. The team emphasizes the clinical utility of sonography as a complementary or alternative modality to MRI, especially in patients with contraindications to MR arthrography. Their work contributes to improved characterization of subtle fractures and soft tissue abnormalities through detailed imaging correlation with surgical and pathological findings.

MR Arthrography in the Differential Diagnosis of Type II Superior Labral Anteroposterior Lesion and Sublabral Recess
Wook Jin, Kyung Nam Ryu, Se Hwan Kwon, Yong Girl Rhee, Dal Mo Yang
SJR Q1American Journal of Roentgenology

Although the MR arthrographic findings were similar for type II SLAP lesion and sublabral recess, laterally curved high signal intensity on oblique coronal images, concomitant anterosuperior labral tear, and anteroposterior extension of high signal intensity on axial images were helpful findings in the diagnosis of type II SLAP lesion.

Diagnostic Values of Sonography for Assessment of Sternal Fractures Compared With Conventional Radiography and Bone Scans
Wook Jin, Dal Mo Yang, Hyun Cheol Kim, Kyung Nam Ryu
SJR Q2Journal of Ultrasound in MedicineOA

We could detect sternal fractures more effectively with sonography than with conventional radiography and bone scans. In addition, sternal fracture locations showed relatively even distributions, and focal fractures in the manubrium were not easily detected on bone scans.

Sonographic Findings of Ruptured Epidermal Inclusion Cysts in Superficial Soft Tissue
Wook Jin, Kyung Nam Ryu, Gou Young Kim, Hyun Cheol Kim, Jae Hoon Lee, Ji Seon Park
SJR Q2Journal of Ultrasound in Medicine

A ruptured epidermal inclusion cyst visualized by sonography had variable shapes; the sonographic findings can be useful for obtaining a correct diagnosis of a ruptured epidermal inclusion cyst.

SJR Q2Journal of Ultrasound in Medicine

When the arthroscopic results were used as the reference standard, our preliminary study revealed that sonography managed to show anterosuperior labral abnormalities, although it had a lesser diagnostic ability than MR arthrography in diagnosing anterosuperior labral tears. Additional investigations including larger numbers of patients are required to determine whether sonography can be an alternative or adjunctive imaging technique for diagnosis of hip labral tears, especially in patients who d

Cystic Lesions in the Posterosuperior Portion of the Humeral Head on MR Arthrography: Correlations with Gross and Histologic Findings in Cadavers
Wook Jin, Kyung Nam Ryu, Yong Koo Park, Weon Kyu Lee, Sung Hye Ko, Dal Mo Yang
SJR Q1American Journal of Roentgenology

Cysts in the posterosuperior portion of the humeral head (the bare area) were located in the lateral humeral head just posterior to the greater tuberosity. These cysts were lined with collagen connective tissue and were connected to the joint spaces. We suggest that these pseudocysts in the posterosuperior portion of the humeral head may be a normal variant rather than being an abnormal change or vascular channel.

Sonographic Appearances of Small Organizing Hematomas and Thrombi Mimicking Superficial Soft Tissue Tumors
Jung Kyu Ryu, Wook Jin, Gou Young Kim
SJR Q2Journal of Ultrasound in Medicine

We retrospectively reviewed 2 cases of organizing hematomas and 2 cases of intravascular organizing thrombi and investigated correlations between sonographic and pathologic findings. In all 4 cases, a well-defined hypoechoic heterogeneous mass with surrounding increased echogenicity was evident in the subcutaneous fat layer. Organizing hematomas and thrombi have sonographic features similar to those of benign-looking soft tissue tumors. These lesions should therefore be considered in the differe

Sonographic Features of Superficial‐Type Nodular Fasciitis in the Musculoskeletal System
Kyung Jin Lee, Wook Jin, Gou Young Kim, Sun Jung Rhee, So Young Park, Ji Seon Park, Kyung Nam Ryu
SJR Q2Journal of Ultrasound in Medicine

OBJECTIVES: We evaluated the sonographic features of superficial-type nodular fasciitis in 9 pathologically proven cases. METHODS: Review of the radiology and pathology databases yielded 14 cases of histologically proven superficial-type nodular fasciitis, which was defined as nodular fasciitis located in the subcutaneous fat layer or outer muscle fascia between the subcutaneous fat layer and muscle. Sonograms were available in 9 patients. Two musculoskeletal radiologists retrospectively reviewe

Wook Jin, Gou Young Kim, So Young Park, Young Soo Chun, Deok Ho Nam, Ji Seon Park, Kyung Nam Ryu
SJR Q1American Journal of Roentgenology

Sonography can play an important role in the diagnosis of benign, vascularized superficial soft-tissue tumors. Awareness of these findings is important in establishing the correct diagnosis and determining the optimal treatment.
