About the Lab

Professor Woong Ju's research lab focuses on molecular oncology and cancer biology, with a primary emphasis on epithelial ovarian cancer and endometrial cancer. The lab investigates the genetic and molecular mechanisms underlying chemoresistance, metastasis, and disease progression, utilizing gene expression profiling, functional genomics, and translational mouse models. Additional research explores the epidemiological and psychosocial dimensions of gynecological cancers, including HPV-related psychosocial impacts and the role of genetic polymorphisms in cancer susceptibility. The lab integrates molecular biology with clinical and population-based studies to identify novel biomarkers and therapeutic targets.

SJR Q1Oncology Research Featuring Preclinical and Clinical Cancer TherapeuticsOA

A major obstacle in treatment of epithelial ovarian cancer is chemoresistance. The aim of this study was to determine whether distinct gene expression profiles are associated with chemoresistance in epithelial ovarian carcinoma. We performed global gene expression analysis in 13 primary epithelial ovarian cancer tissues including 5 primary chemosensitive tumors and 8 primary chemoresistant tumors using Affymetrix HGU133A microarray. The gene expression patterns of chemosensitive tumors were comp

Aberrant epigenetic regulation of GABRP associates with aggressive phenotype of ovarian cancer

SJR Q1Experimental & Molecular MedicineOA

Metastasis is a major cause of therapeutic failure in ovarian cancer. To elucidate molecular mechanisms of ovarian cancer metastasis, we previously established a metastatic xenograft mouse model using human ovarian carcinoma SK-OV-3 cells. Using gene expression profiling, we found that γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA)A receptor π subunit (GABRP) expression was upregulated (>4-fold) in metastatic tissues from our xenograft mice compared with SK-OV-3 cells. Importantly, GABRP knockdown dimini

Leisure-time physical activity and endometrial cancer risk: Dose-response meta-analysis of epidemiological studies
NaNa Keum, Woong Ju, Dong Hoon Lee, Eric L. Ding, Chung C. Hsieh, Julie E. Goodman, Edward L. Giovannucci
SJR Q1International Journal of Cancer

Although considerable evidence suggests that leisure-time physical activity is associated with a reduced risk of endometrial cancer (EC), the shape of dose-response relationship has not been investigated and previous meta-analyses have not accounted for differences in measures of physical activity. To address such issues, we conducted linear and nonlinear dose-response meta-analyses by metabolic equivalent of task (MET)-hour/week and hour/week, respectively, based on observational studies publis

Matrix metalloproteinase‐1 promoter polymorphism and epithelial ovarian cancer: Does ethnicity matter?
Woong Ju, Jae‐Weon Kim, Noh‐Hyun Park, Yong‐Sang Song, Seung Cheol Kim, Soon‐Beom Kang, Hyo‐Pyo Lee
SJR Q2Journal of obstetrics and gynaecology research

AIM: To estimate the relationship between matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-1 promoter -1607 bp polymorphism and the risk of epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) in Korean women and to clarify the ethnic difference in genotype distribution of this polymorphism. METHODS: Single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) of MMP-1 promoter -1607 region in 133 EOC patients and 332 cancer-free patients were investigated. Then the associations of this polymorphism with EOC or its clinicopathological parameters were analyz

Objectives To estimate self-reported human papillomavirus (HPV) disease-related psychosocial impact among male and female patients in South Korea. Design In this multicentre cross-sectional study, psychosocial impacts were estimated using a one-time survey capturing HPV Impact Profile (HIP) results, CuestionarioEspecifico en Condilomas Acuminados (CECA; in Spanish)—‘Specific questionnaire for Condylomata Acuminata’ and the EuroQol-5 Dimension (EQ-5D) surveys. Placenta increta after first-trimester dilatation and curettage manifesting as an unusual uterine mass: magnetic resonance findings
Woong Ju, S. C. Kim
SJR Q3Acta Radiologica

Placenta increta during the first trimester of pregnancy is extremely rare. Only a few cases of placenta accreta during the latter half of pregnancy manifesting as a uterine mass have been published. This report describes a case of placenta increta that caused prolonged bleeding after a first-trimester abortion, and was identified by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) as a heterogeneous mass in the myometrium. This is the first report of a placenta increta detected as a uterine mass after first-tr

OBJECTIVES: Estimate the prevalence of genital warts (GW) and GW-related healthcare resource use and costs among male and female patients seeking treatment in South Korea. DESIGN: To estimate GW prevalence, physicians in five major South Korean regions recorded daily logs of patients (n=71 655) seeking care between July 26 and September 27, 2011. Overall prevalence estimates (and 95% CIs) were weighted by the estimated number of physicians in each specialty and the estimated proportion of total

SJR Q3Diagnostic Cytopathology

For cervical cancer screening, HPV-DNA test is expensive and is not easily available in all clinical situations. Thus, we investigated the role of p16(ink4a) immunostaining as another adjunct test to diagnose cervical neoplasia in equivocal liquid based cytology. Eighty-seven patients were randomly selected for this study (3 patients with normal, 84 patients with abnormal including 24 ASCUS, 30 LSIL, and 30 HSIL). We performed p16(ink4a) immunostaining on ThinPrep slide and on each case from the

SJR Q2Journal of obstetrics and gynaecology research

AIM: To assess the incidence and clinicopathological significance of microsatellite instability (MSI) and the protein expression of hMLH1 and hMSH2 in sporadic endometrioid endometrial adenocarcinoma (SEEA). METHODS: A total of 50 patients with pure endometrioid sporadic endometrial adenocarcinoma were enrolled in the study. MSI analysis was done using five polymorphic markers (BAT26, D5S346, BAT25, D17S250, D2S123) and the protein expression of the hMLH1 and hMSH2 genes was determined by immuno
