Professor Yangsoon Lee's research lab specializes in antimicrobial resistance, particularly focusing on carbapenem-resistant Gram-negative pathogens such as *Acinetobacter baumannii* and *Klebsiella pneumoniae*. The lab investigates molecular mechanisms of resistance, including the role of mobile genetic elements like insertion sequences (e.g., ISAba10) and gene regulation (e.g., bla(OXA-23) expression), as well as the epidemiology and spread of high-risk clones. Their work integrates molecular diagnostics, whole-genome sequencing, and resistome analysis to understand the genetic basis of multidrug resistance in clinical settings, especially in Korean healthcare environments. The lab also evaluates the efficacy of beta-lactam antibiotics and newer agents like tigecycline and colistin against multidrug-resistant pathogens.

We investigated an outbreak caused by carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii carrying the bla(OXA-23) gene. This study was performed to determine the mechanisms for acquiring carbapenem resistance in six clinical isolates of Acinetobacter baumannii. We determined the antimicrobial susceptibilities of 255 clinical isolates of anaerobic bacteria collected in 2007 and 2008 at a tertiary-care hospital in South Korea. Piperacillin-tazobactam, cefoxitin, imipenem, and meropenem were highly active beta-lactam agents against most of the isolates tested. The rates of resistance of Bacteroides fragilis group organisms and anaerobic gram-positive cocci to moxifloxacin were 11 to 18% and 0 to 27%, respectively.

We investigated the molecular mechanisms of carbapenem resistance in clinical isolates of Enterobacter cloacae and their clinical characteristics.
