About the Lab

Professor Yejin Lee's research lab focuses on respiratory and systemic diseases, with a strong emphasis on interstitial lung diseases such as idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and tuberculosis. The lab investigates the interplay between metabolic conditions—like diabetes—and respiratory infections, as well as the role of biomarkers such as gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT) in predicting cancer risk. Additionally, the lab explores genetic susceptibility markers, particularly HLA-related SNPs, in early-onset COPD, and applies advanced computational methods, including machine learning, to model and reconstruct complex biological networks.

Clinical impact of depression and anxiety in patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis
Ye Jin Lee, Sun Mi Choi, Yeon Joo Lee, Young‐Jae Cho, Ho Il Yoon, Jae Ho Lee, Choon-Taek Lee, Jong Sun Park
SJR Q1PLoS ONEOA

Our findings indicate that depression and anxiety are relatively common in patients with IPF. Although no significant differences were noted with regard to survival rate and hospitalization, the present study suggests that depression and anxiety significantly influence quality of life in patients with IPF.

Determining the association between repeatedly elevated serum gamma‐glutamyltransferase levels and risk of respiratory cancer: A nationwide population‐based cohort study
Ye Jin Lee, Kyungdo Han, Dahye Kim, Chang‐Hoon Lee
SJR Q1Cancer MedicineOA

BACKGROUND: Although elevated serum gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT) is a known indicator of increased risk of several cancers, the clinical value of repeated measurements of GGT has not been determined. Therefore, we aimed to investigate whether repeatedly elevated serum GGT levels are associated with the risk of respiratory cancer incidence. METHODS: We included participants who had undergone the Korean Health screening four times during 2009-2012 and had previously undergone four consecutive e

Reconstructing Damaged Complex Networks Based on Neural Networks
Ye Jin Lee, Insoo Sohn
SJR Q2SymmetryOA

Despite recent progress in the study of complex systems, reconstruction of damaged networks due to random and targeted attack has not been addressed before. In this paper, we formulate the network reconstruction problem as an identification of network structure based on much reduced link information. Furthermore, a novel method based on multilayer perceptron neural network is proposed as a solution to the problem of network reconstruction. Based on simulation results, it was demonstrated that th

Pulmonary Histoplasmosis Identified by Video-Assisted Thoracic Surgery (VATS) Biopsy: a Case Report
Ye Jin Lee, Hye-Rin Kang, Jin Hwa Song, Sooim Sin, Sang‐Min Lee
SJR Q2Journal of Korean Medical ScienceOA

Histoplasmosis is a common endemic mycosis in North, Central, and South America, but Korea is not known as an endemic area. We treated an immunocompetent Korean patient who had histoplasmosis. A 65-year-old Korean man presented with multiple pulmonary clumps of tiny nodules in the both lungs. He had been diagnosed 40 years earlier with pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) and a fungus ball had been diagnosed 4 years earlier. He denied any history of overseas travel. The patient visited our hospital with

Inhaled Corticosteroids Is Not Associated with the Risk of Pneumonia in Asthma
Ye Jin Lee, Yong Bum Park
SJR Q2Tuberculosis & respiratory diseasesOA

The introduction of inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) for the management of asthma has led to a decrease in acute exacerbation of asthma. However, there are concerns regarding the safety of long-term ICS use, particularly pneumonia. Growing evidence indicates that ICS use is associated with an increased risk of pneumonia in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, whereas the risk in patients with asthma remains unclear. This review discusses the effect of ICS on pneumonia among patients

Antimicrobial, Antioxidant and Hemolytic Activity of Water-soluble Extract of Mottled Anemone Urticina crassicornis

SJR Q3Fisheries and aquatic sciencesOA

We evaluated the biological activities of five water extracts of tissue of the mottled anemone Urticina crassicornis. Most extracts exhibited broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity as determined by ultrasensitive radial diffusion assay (URDA) against gram-positive and -negative bacteria, including a fish pathogen, Aeromonas hydrophila, but no activity against fungi. The activity of the extracts was abolished by tryptic digestion, indicating that protein compounds were responsible for the antimicr

Purpose Screening for lung cancer in high-risk patients using the National Lung Screening Trial (NLST) criteria resulted in a decreased lung cancer-related mortality rate. However, whether these criteria are applicable to the Korean has not been investigated thus far. Therefore, we estimated the utility of the NLST criteria as a screening tool for lung cancer in the Korean population. Materials and Methods The total number of newly diagnosed lung cancer cases in 2013 was obtained from the Korea

Escalation Time to Open Triple Combination Therapy from the Initiation of LAMA versus ICS/LABA in COPD Management: Findings from Comparing the Incidence of Tiotropium and ICS/LABA in Real-World Use in South Korea (CITRUS) Study
Ye Jin Lee, Chin Kook Rhee, Yong Il Hwang, Kwang Ha Yoo, So Eun Lee, Doik Lee, Yong Bum Park, Youlim Kim
SJR Q2Journal of Personalized MedicineOA

Background: bronchodilators are the key treatment for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), however, inhaled corticosteroids (ICSs)/long-acting β2-agonists (LABA) are widely prescribed. We compared the escalation time to open triple combination therapy between long-acting muscarinic receptor antagonists (LAMA) and ICS/LABA in COPD management. Methods: this retrospective study included COPD patients selected from the National Health Insurance Service of South Korea from January 2005 to Ap
