About the Lab

Professor Yoo-Kyung Kim's research lab specializes in medical imaging and diagnostic radiology, with a focus on advanced image reconstruction techniques, particularly in computed tomography (CT) and cardiac MRI. The lab investigates iterative and compressed sensing methods to improve image quality at ultra-low radiation doses, enabling accurate size measurements of pulmonary nodules and enhancing diagnostic confidence. Additionally, the lab explores the clinical implications of specific imaging patterns—such as late gadolinium enhancement distribution in non-ischemic cardiomyopathy and pleural plaque characteristics in asbestos-exposed populations—contributing to refined risk stratification and differential diagnosis in pulmonary and cardiovascular diseases.

Ultra-Low-Dose CT of the Thorax Using Iterative Reconstruction: Evaluation of Image Quality and Radiation Dose Reduction
Yookyung Kim, Yoon Kyung Kim, Bo Eun Lee, Seok Jeong Lee, Yon Ju Ryu, Jin Hwa Lee, Jung Hyun Chang
SJR Q1American Journal of Roentgenology

Iterative reconstruction allows ultra-low-dose CT and affords acceptable image quality, allowing size measurements of solid pulmonary nodules to be made.

LGE confined to the RVIP among NICM patients did not significantly increase the risk of adverse cardiac events, and also showed a better outcome than the same extent of LGE located in the LV. Identification of this unique LGE distribution may help refine the current risk stratification.

Wavelet-Based Compressed Sensing Using a Gaussian Scale Mixture Model
Yookyung Kim, Mariappan S. Nadar, Ali Bilgin
SJR Q1IEEE Transactions on Image Processing

While initial compressed sensing (CS) recovery techniques operated under the implicit assumption that the sparse domain coefficients are independently distributed, recent results have indicated that integrating a statistical or structural dependence model of sparse domain coefficients into CS enhances recovery. In this paper, we present a method for exploiting empirical dependences among wavelet coefficients during CS recovery using a Bayes least-square Gaussian-scale-mixture model. The proposed

CT Characteristics of Pleural Plaques Related to Occupational or Environmental Asbestos Exposure from South Korean Asbestos Mines
Yookyung Kim, Jun‐Pyo Myong, Jeong Kyong Lee, Jeung Sook Kim, Yoon Kyung Kim, Soon‐Hee Jung
SJR Q1Korean Journal of RadiologyOA

Pleural plaques in asbestos-exposed individuals are variable in number and size; and show a predominant distribution in the upper ventral and lower dorsal chest walls, right diaphragm, and left mediastinum. Asbestos mine workers have a higher extent of plaques and pulmonary fibrosis versus environmentally exposed individuals.

Invasive cervical resorption: treatment challenges
Yookyung Kim, Chan-Young Lee, Euiseong Kim, Byoung‐Duck Roh
SJR Q2Restorative Dentistry & EndodonticsOA

Invasive cervical resorption is a relatively uncommon form of external root resorption. It is characterized by invasion of cervical region of the root by fibrovascular tissue derived from the periodontal ligament. This case presents an invasive cervical resorption occurring in maxillary lateral incisor, following damage in cervical cementum from avulsion and intracoronal bleaching procedure. Flap reflection, debridement and restoration with glass ionomer cement were performed in an attempt to re

The Pleural Sandwich Sign in Two Cases of Primary Pleural Lymphoma
Yookyung Kim, Myung-Jae Lee, Yon Ju Ryu, Min-Sun Cho
SJR Q1Korean Journal of RadiologyOA

The sandwich sign is used to describe mesenteric lymphoma in which mesenteric vessels and fat are enveloped by enlarged mesenteric lymph nodes. We present two cases of primary pleural lymphoma demonstrating the "pleural sandwich sign". Contrast-enhanced computed tomography showed conglomerated parietal pleural and extrapleural masses encasing the intercostal arteries. Histopathological examinations confirmed low grade marginal zone B-cell lymphoma in an 80-year-old man and diffuse large B-cell l

The effects of gabapentin pretreatment on brain injury induced by focal cerebral ischemia/reperfusion in the rat

SJR Q1Korean journal of anesthesiologyOA

These results indicate that gabapentin may have a neuroprotective effect and can reduce early neuronal injury caused by focal cerebral ischemia/reperfusion; this may be mediated by expression of Hsp70. However, gabapentin pretreatment did not prevent caspase-dependent apoptosis.

A Pleural Loose Body Mimicking a Pleural Tumor: A Case Report
Yookyung Kim, Sung Shine Shim, Eun Mi Chun, Tae Hee Won, Sanghui Park
SJR Q1Korean Journal of RadiologyOA

We present a rare case of a pleural loose body, thought to be a pedunculated pleural tumor, found incidentally in a 58-year-old female. Computed tomography showed a non-enhancing mass, which migrated along the mediastinum and paravertebral area. Thoracoscopic surgery revealed a 4 cm, soap-like mass that was found to be a fibrin body consisting of hyalinized collagen histopathologically. Mobility and the lack of contrast enhancement of a pleural mass are important clues to diagnosing this benign

Video compressed sensing using iterative self-similarity modeling and residual reconstruction
Yookyung Kim, Han Oh, Ali Bilgin
SJR Q3Journal of Electronic Imaging

Compressed sensing (CS) has great potential for use in video data acquisition and storage because it makes it unnecessary to collect an enormous amount of data and to perform the computationally demanding compression process. We propose an effective CS algorithm for video that consists of two iterative stages. In the first stage, frames containing the dominant structure are estimated. These frames are obtained by thresholding the coefficients of similar blocks. In the second stage, refined resid
