About the Lab

Professor Yoo Young Lee's research lab specializes in gynecologic oncology, with a primary focus on improving outcomes for patients with cervical and ovarian cancers. The lab investigates prognostic biomarkers such as the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and molecular targets like dynamin 2 to understand tumor progression and treatment response. It also explores novel therapeutic strategies, including Wee1 inhibitors combined with radiotherapy, and evaluates treatment timing and surgical interventions in recurrent disease. The research integrates clinical data with molecular mechanisms to advance precision oncology in gynecologic cancers.

AIM: This study was designed to investigate the prognostic value of the neutrophil:lymphocyte ratio (NLR) in cervical cancer. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients with clinically staged cervical carcinoma (IB to IVA) at Samsung Medical Center, Seoul, Korea, from 1996 to 2007 were retrospectively enrolled. RESULTS: We enrolled 1061 patients with cervical cancer. The median NLR was 1.9, with a range of 0.3-27.0. When the cohort was divided according to the median NLR, poorer survival outcomes were obser

Although the concurrent use of a chemotherapeutic agent and radiotherapy improves survival in patients with locally advanced or recurrent cervical cancer, severe side effects related to chemotherapy are frequent and may result in a low quality of life for the patients. In this study, we investigated the effects of a combination of Wee1 inhibitor (AZD1775) and irradiation in cervical cancer. In vitro effects of AZD1775 with irradiation in human cervical cancer cells were assessed by clonogenic su

Interval between secondary cytoreductive surgery and adjuvant chemotherapy is not associated with survivals in patients with recurrent ovarian cancer

SJR Q1Journal of Ovarian ResearchOA

BACKGROUND: Secondary cytoreductive surgery (SCS) is possible in selected patients with recurrent epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC). The goal of SCS is complete resection, although chemotherapy is always followed. Delayed intervals between primary debulking surgery and adjuvant chemotherapy was reported to be associated with poorer survivals, however, the role of intervals in recurrent disease is still unknown. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective cohort study reviewed data from electronic me

In 2020 series, we summarized the major clinical research advances in gynecologic oncology with providing representative figures of the most influential study for 1 of each 3 gynecologic cancers: cervix, ovary, and uterine corpus. Review for cervical cancer covered targeted agents and immune checkpoint inhibitors, adjuvant radiation therapy or concurrent/sequential chemoradiation therapy after radical hysterectomy in early cervical cancer, radical surgery in early cervical cancer; and prevention

Clinical factors associated with prognosis in low-grade serous ovarian carcinoma: experiences at two large academic institutions in Korea and Taiwan

SJR Q1Scientific ReportsOA

Low-grade ovarian serous carcinoma (LGSOC) has clinical features different from high-grade serous ovarian carcinoma (HGSOC) accounting for the majority of epithelial ovarian cancer. Because of its rarity, previous studies have only focused on the high-grade disease without considering the differences between the two subtypes. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of the clinical prognostic factors known for HGSOC on survival in patients with LGSOC. Based on the Federation of Gynecology and Obs

Dynamin 2 is known as a protein involved in cell migration and endocytosis. We aimed to investigate the association between dynamin 2 expressions and tumor progression in early cervical carcinoma (IB1-IIA). Dynamin 2 expression was evaluated at protein level in thirty seven paraffin-embedded, formalin-fixed tissues including four normal cervix tissues and compared with pathologic risk factors for recurrence after surgery in thirty three patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the cervix.
