About the Lab
Professor Yoon Jic Kim's research lab focuses on public health and preventive medicine, with a strong emphasis on aging, bone metabolism, and nutritional status in vulnerable populations. The lab investigates hormonal and metabolic factors—particularly insulin-like growth factors (IGF) and bone turnover markers—related to postmenopausal bone health, while also examining the impact of nutrition, such as vitamin A status in children, on long-term health outcomes. Additionally, the lab explores health system and urban planning intersections, including transit-oriented development (TOD) and its influence on public transportation use, reflecting a multidisciplinary approach to population health. The research integrates clinical, epidemiological, and environmental data to inform public health policy and interventions.

15OBJECTIVES: The changes in circulating IGF components after the menopause and the potential role of new markers of bone turnover and circulating IGF components in predicting bone mass in postmenopausal women are still controversial and the relationship between these two systems has not been investigated. The aims of this study were to investigate the changes in circulating IGF components after the menopause, to evaluate whether new markers of bone turnover and circulating IGF components reflect
Dietary intakes and plasma concentrations of retinol and carotenoids were estimated in assessing the vitamin A status of young children in Kwangju, Republic of Korea. Three consecutive 24-hour food recalls and fasting blood samples were obtained from 123 healthy children (58 boys, 65 girls), aged 2-6 years. The daily vitamin A intake (mean +/- SD) was 355.9 +/- 178.1 microg retinol equivalents or 239.0 +/- 111.2 microg retinol activity equivalents. Provitamin A carotenoid intakes were 1211.2 +/-
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate demented elderly caring competences of the formal caregivers(FCs) and to identify the influencing factors of the caring competence. Methods: A developed questionnaire survey was carried out using a convenient sampling method (N=201). Data were analyzed by applying descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Duncan test, Pearson’s correlation coefficient, and stepwise multiple regression. Results: The average score for the perceived FCs’ caring com

Background: Injury is a major public health problem and accounts for 10% of the global burden of disease. This study intends to present the temporal trend in the injury burden in Korea and to compare the burden size by injury mechanism and age group. Methods: This study was a nationwide population-based observational study. We used two data sets, the death certificates statistics and the Korean National Hospital Discharge Survey data (2004–2012). We calculated age-standardized disability-adjuste
Purpose: This study sought to identify how initiating breastfeeding soon after birth affected breastfeeding practice. Methods: The subjects were mothers and newborns in Seoul’s S. University Hospital maternity unit who elected to breastfeed. They were divided into an experimental group, which practiced an latching-on (latching-on within 30 minutes after birth), and a control group, which did not. Both groups’ daily frequencies of breastfeeding and supplementary-glucose or bottle feeding were rec
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to understand the level of functional health literacy and its influence on perceived health status in Korean older adults. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in Daegu, Kyungpook and Busan province. A total of 103 older adults aged 65 yr or older were interviewed in person between July 1 to August 30, 2007. Results: A high proportion of older adults were unable to read and understand written basic medical instructions. Only 40-50% were able to c
Purpose: The purpose of the study was to identify the prevalence, risk factors and clinical meanings of geriatric foot problems and to suggest implications for the future. Methods: One hundred eighty nine elderly aged 60 and over from institution as well as community were investigated for their foot conditions by means of a questionnaire including general characteristics, self care capacity, risk factors, foot problem checklist, X-ray, podoscopy and foot scan. Purpose: Pedestrian injury is one of the most frequent injury mechanism in pediatrics. This study aimed to measure the association between time of pedestrian injury and injury severity among pediatric patients. Methods: We used the Emergency Department based Injury In-depth Surveillance (EDIIS) database from 23 emergency departments between 2013 and 2016. All pediatric (≤15 years old) patients with pedestrian injury were eligible, excluding cases with unknown outcomes. Primary and secondary endp
Purpose: This study was conducted to investigate the level of life satisfaction (LS) as well as identify factors influencing LS among the community-dwelling elders by health status. Methods: A questionnaire survey was carried out using a convenience sampling method. The participants were 524 older persons; good health status (GHS, 183), poor health status (PHS, 341). Results: The participants of the GHS group showed significantly higher levels for attitudes to aging, family support, economic sta
