About the Lab

Professor Yoonsoo Park's research lab specializes in hip arthroplasty and orthopedic implant technology, with a focus on improving surgical outcomes through advanced implant design and surgical techniques. The lab investigates metal sensitivity and its role in osteolysis, particularly in metal-on-metal hip replacements, and explores the long-term performance of cementless and short-stem hip systems. They also examine the clinical and radiographic outcomes of hip preservation and replacement in complex patient populations, such as those with avascular necrosis post-renal transplant. The lab emphasizes the use of robotic assistance and innovative implant coatings to enhance surgical precision and implant longevity.

Early Osteolysis Following Second-Generation Metal-on-Metal Hip Replacement
Youn-Soo Park
SJR Q1Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery

These findings raise the possibility that early osteolysis in patients with this second-generation metal-on-metal hip replacement is associated with abnormalities consistent with delayed-type hypersensitivity to metal. A prospective study in which a large group of patients is evaluated with multiple diagnostic methods is needed in order to establish whether there is a causal relationship between metal hypersensitivity and osteolysis.

Robot-assisted primary cementless total hip arthroplasty with a short femoral stem: a prospective randomized short-term outcome study

Computer Aided SurgeryOA

The present study suggested that robot-assisted short stem THA could increase the accuracy of stem alignment, improve leg length equality, and help reduce the risk of intraoperative femoral fracture as compared with manual rasping. However, the clinical outcome scores did not differ between the two groups at the time of short-term follow-up. Long-term follow-up is needed to determine whether there will be a long-term clinical relevance of robot-assisted implantation of short femoral stems in THA

SJR Q1Hip International

We present our experience of contemporary cementless total hip arthroplasty (THA) conducted at a single institution to treat advanced avascular necrosis (AVN) in renal transplant patients. Between October 1997 and October 2008, 45 consecutive primary cementless THAs were performed in 30 patients with advanced AVN after renal transplantation. There were 18 males (27 hips) and 12 females (18 hips) (patient group) with an overall mean age 44 years (22 to 68). The clinical and radiographic results w

This study suggests HRA performed for appropriately selected patients with ONFH can show excellent long-term clinical results. Therefore, HRA should remain as one of the treatment options for ONFH, and further development of HRA implants should be continued.
