About the Lab
Professor You-Jung Ha's research lab focuses on inflammatory and autoimmune diseases, with a strong emphasis on understanding the pathogenic mechanisms underlying rheumatic diseases such as polymyositis, dermatomyositis, and rheumatoid arthritis. The lab investigates systemic inflammation, immune cell dynamics, and novel biomarkers like NLR and CAR for disease prognosis. It also explores innovative therapeutic strategies, including photothermally controlled drug delivery using multifunctional nanoparticles for targeted treatment of arthritis. The lab integrates molecular biology, immunology, and translational research to develop precision medicine approaches for chronic inflammatory conditions.

15Recent studies have suggested that neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and C-reactive protein-to-albumin ratio (CAR) are emerging markers of disease activity and prognosis in patients with chronic inflammatory diseases, cardiovascular diseases, or malignancies. Therefore, we investigated the clinical significance and prognostic value of the NLR and CAR in adult patients with polymyositis and dermatomyositis. The medical records of 197 patients with newly diagnosed polymyositis/dermatomyositis b
Acute glaucoma is a leading cause of irreversible blindness in East Asia. The mechanisms underlying retinal neuronal injury induced by a sudden rise in intraocular pressure (IOP) remain obscure. Here we demonstrate that the activation of CXCL10/CXCR3 axis, which mediates the recruitment and activation of inflammatory cells, has a critical role in a mouse model of acute glaucoma. The mRNA and protein expression levels of CXCL10 and CXCR3 were significantly increased after IOP-induced retinal isch
Lung illness encountered in patients with rheumatic diseases bears clinical significance in terms of increased morbidity and mortality as well as potential challenges placed on patient care. Although our understanding of natural history of this important illness is still limited, epidemiologic knowledge has been accumulated during the past decade to provide useful information on the risk factors and prognosis of lung involvements in rheumatic diseases. Moreover, the pathogenesis particularly in
Our study aimed to investigate whether serum leucine-rich alpha-2-glycoprotein (LRG) levels are elevated in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). In addition, we assessed their correlation with disease activity parameters and pro-inflammatory cytokine, tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α). Our study included 69 patients with RA and 48 age- and sex-matched healthy controls. Serum concentrations of TNF-α and LRG were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Serum LRG concentrations were sign
BACKGROUNDS: Despite the advances of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) therapeutics, several patients do not receive adequate treatment due to the toxicity and/or insufficient response of drugs. The aim of this study is to design photothermally controlled drug release from multifunctional nanoparticles (MNPs) at a near-infrared (NIR) irradiated site to improve therapeutic efficacy for RA and reduce side effects. METHODS: Au film was deposited onto methotrexate (MTX)-loaded poly(ethylene glycol)-poly(lac
CAAT/enhancer-binding protein-beta (C/EBPβ) is a transcription factor that regulates interleukin-1β (IL-1β)-induced catabolic pathways, including the expression of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), in chondrocytes. We previously reported that suppressor of cytokine signaling 1 (SOCS1) inhibits IL-1β signaling in chondrocytes. However, the effect of SOCS1 on C/EBPβ has not been explored. To investigate the interaction between SOCS1 and C/EBPβ, we established human SW1353 cells with overexpression
Objectives: This study investigated the expression of proviral-integration site for Moloney murine leukaemia virus (PIM) -1 kinase in RA synovium and RA fibroblast-like synoviocytes (FLSs) along with its impact on RA-FLS aggressiveness. Methods: The expression of PIM kinases was assessed in synovial tissues by immunohistochemistry and double IF. After PIM-1 inhibition using either small-interfering RNA or the chemical inhibitor AZD1208, we performed proliferation and migration assays and measure
Fucoxanthin (FX), a natural carotenoid present in edible brown seaweed, is known for its therapeutic potential in various diseases, including bone disease. However, its underlying regulatory mechanisms in osteoclastogenesis remain unclear. In this study, we investigated the effect of FX on osteoclast differentiation and its regulatory signaling pathway. In vitro studies were performed using osteoclast-like RAW264.7 cells stimulated with the soluble receptor activator of nuclear factor-κB ligand
AIM: Interleukin (IL)-32 is known to act as a proinflammatory cytokine and is likely involved in several chronic inflammatory diseases. The aims of this study were to investigate whether serum IL-32 levels are elevated in patients with Behçet's disease (BD) and to identify the correlation between IL-32 levels and disease activity. METHODS: We enrolled 50 patients with BD and 35 healthy controls. Serum IL-32 levels were measured using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Serum levels of IL-12p70
OBJECTIVES: To assess the differences in clinical outcomes between patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) with early menopause (EM) (<45 years) and usual menopause (UM) (≥45 years) and to identify the impact of EM on longitudinal changes in RA activity and patient-reported outcomes (PROs). METHODS: We recruited 2878 postmenopausal women with RA from the Korean Observational Study Network for Arthritis. Patients were examined at baseline and for 5 consecutive years using the Simplified Disease A
Retroperitoneal fibrosis (RPF) is a rare disease with unclear etiology, which is characterized by chronic non-specific inflammation of the retroperitoneum. This study was performed to investigate the clinical characteristics, laboratory findings, radiologic findings, treatment and outcome in Korean patients with RPF. We retrospectively reviewed medical records of 27 RPF patients who were admitted to Yonsei University Medical Center between 1998 and 2009. Twenty-two patients (81%) were male. The
OBJECTIVES: To investigate the expressions of interferon (IFN)-λs and their receptor, IL28RA, in minor salivary glands (MSG) of pSS patients and their effects on the salivary gland cells. METHODS: The expressions of IFN-λs and IL28RA were evaluated in MSG by immunohistochemistry in 15 patients with pSS and in 5 patients with non-SS sicca. Poly(I:C)-induced IL-28A and IL-29 expressions were determined in immortalized human salivary gland acinar (NS-SV-AC) and ductal (NS-SV-DC) cell lines. We asse
OBJECTIVES: To investigate computer-aided quantitative scores from high-resolution CT (HRCT) images and determine their longitudinal changes and clinical significance in patients with idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIMs)-related interstitial lung disease (IIMs-ILD). METHODS: The clinical data and HRCT images of 80 patients with IIMs who underwent serial HRCT scans at least twice were retrospectively analysed. Quantitative ILD (QILD) scores (%) were calculated as the sum of the extent of lun
