About the Lab

Professor Young A Kim's research lab focuses on molecular oncology and cancer biology, with a particular emphasis on thyroid cancer pathogenesis, tumor microenvironment, and signaling pathways driving tumor progression. The lab investigates genomic and transcriptomic alterations in aggressive thyroid cancers such as anaplastic thyroid cancer (ATC) and advanced differentiated thyroid cancers, identifying key drivers like TERT, AKT1, and CDKN2A, as well as immune checkpoint molecules such as PD-L1. The lab also explores epigenetic and mitotic regulation mechanisms, including the role of histone modifications and the chromosomal passenger complex in cancer cell division. Additionally, the lab contributes to translational research by evaluating prognostic biomarkers and therapeutic targets in breast cancer and composite materials for impact resistance, reflecting a multidisciplinary approach to cancer and biomedical materials research.

Abstract Anaplastic thyroid cancer (ATC) and advanced differentiated thyroid cancers (DTCs) show fatal outcomes, unlike DTCs. Here, we demonstrate mutational landscape of 27 ATCs and 86 advanced DTCs by massively-parallel DNA sequencing, and transcriptome of 13 ATCs and 12 advanced DTCs were profiled by RNA sequencing. TERT , AKT1 , PIK3CA , and EIF1AX were frequently co-mutated with driver genes ( BRAF V600E and RAS ) in advanced DTCs as well as ATC, but tumor suppressors (e.g., TP53 and CDKN2A

Abstract Purpose: To determine the prognostic roles of breast cancer subtypes in females with operable invasive breast cancer. Experimental Design: Data of 321,958 patients from Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database were analyzed. Breast cancer subtypes were classified into four categories according to the status of hormone receptor (HRc) and HER2: HRc(+)/HER2(−), HRc(+)/HER2(+), HRc(−)/HER2(+), and HRc(−)/HER2(−). Results: Proportions of HRc(+)/HER2(−), HRc(+)/HER2(+), HRc

PRMT6-mediated H3R2me2a guides Aurora B to chromosome arms for proper chromosome segregation

SJR Q1Nature CommunicationsOA

The kinase Aurora B forms the chromosomal passenger complex (CPC) together with Borealin, INCENP, and Survivin to mediate chromosome condensation, the correction of erroneous spindle-kinetochore attachments, and cytokinesis. Phosphorylation of histone H3 Thr3 by Haspin kinase and of histone H2A Thr120 by Bub1 concentrates the CPC at the centromere. However, how the CPC is recruited to chromosome arms upon mitotic entry is unknown. Here, we show that asymmetric dimethylation at Arg2 on histone H3

SJR Q2International Journal of Aeronautical and Space SciencesOA

In this paper, the impact damage behavior of USN-150B carbon/epoxy composite laminates subjected to high velocity impact was studied experimentally and numerically. Square composite laminates stacked with <TEX>$[45/0/-45/90]_{ns}$</TEX> quasi-symmetric and <TEX>$[0/90]_{ns}$</TEX> cross-ply stacking sequences and a conical shape projectile with steel core, copper skin and lead filler were considered. First high-velocity impact tests were conducted under various test conditions. Three tests were

Our findings suggest that survivin overexpression may be related to the pathogenesis of AC and can be a predictor of disease progression. COX-2 may be involved in the early phase of thyroid carcinoma.

Curcuma alismatifolia is becoming popular for cut flowers and potted plants due to its long inflorescence with many showy p

Background : The association of simian virus 40 (SV40) with certain types of human cancers, including malignant lymphomas, has been a topic of interest for some time. Although the virus is distributed worldwide, its incidences vary according to the specific types of tumors, and the epidemiological areas. The aim of this study was to investigate the frequency of SV40 in malignant lymphomas among Korean patients. Methods : One hundred seventy three cases of malignant lymphomas were evaluated by im

Anatomy of Neck Tissue of Cut Roses as Affected by Bent-neck and Preservative Solution
Young A Kim, Jong Suk Lee
SJR Q2HortScienceOA

To investigate the differences of anatomical structure of neck tissue between bent-neck and strong-neck flowers, scanning electron microscopy of neck tissue during senescence of cut rose flowers held in deionized water or preservative solution (3% sucrose + 200 ppm HQS + 0.1 mM ethionine) was observed. Lignins in xylem, phloem, and interfascicular cambium of neck were stained to red by phloroglucine. More lignin was formed in the phloem of neck in rose flowers held in preservative solution than

SJR Q1Cancer Research

4874 Extranodal NK/T-cell lymphoma is more common among Orientals and recognized as a distinctive clinicopathologic entity. This lymphoma shows a highly aggressive clinical course and development of an effective chemotherapeutic modality is strongly advocated. Hank-1 is an NK/T-cell lymphoma cell line, which is derived from nasal type NK/T-cell lymphoma and a good candidate for the study of molecular characteristics of NK/T-cell lymphomas. Genistein is a major isoflavone of soybeans and has been
