SJR Q2Biomedical MaterialsOA

Nanoparticles of calcium sulfate (nCS) have potential advantages as a ceramic matrix, scaffold and/or vehicle for delivering growth factors for osseous regeneration in a variety of clinical situations. The objectives of this study were to synthesize and characterize nanoparticles of hemihydrate calcium sulfate (nCS) and to develop a nCS-based system for bone regeneration. A cryo-vacuum method was used to process dihydrate CS into dihydrate nCS, which was then subjected to oven drying to produce

The Turning Point in International Migration and Economic Development in Korea
Young‐Bum Park
SJR Q2Asian and Pacific migration journal

"This article aims to analyze the factors which led to the transition in international migration in [the Republic of] Korea. Three issues are explored. First, it is argued that Korea has passed the turning point since Korea needs to accept foreign labor for unskilled jobs for some sectors of the economy. Second, we analyze factors which led Korea to reach this turning point in international migration in the context of demographic change and industrial upgrading. Third, Korea's overseas employmen

SJR Q2Tissue Engineering Part AOA

Critical-sized cranial bone defect remains a great clinical challenge. With advantages in regenerative medicine, injectable hydrogels incorporated with bioactive molecules show great potential in promoting cranial bone repair. Recently, we developed a dual delivery system by sequential release of bone morphogenetic protein 2 (BMP2) followed by insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF1) in microparticles (MPs), and an injectable alginate/collagen (alg/col)-based hydrogel. In this study, we aim to evalua

Visible Light-Enhanced Antibacterial and Osteogenic Functionality of Au and Pt Nanoparticles Deposited on TiO2 Nanotubes
Kyoung-Suk Moon, Eun Joo Choi, Ji‐Myung Bae, Young‐Bum Park, Seunghan Oh
SJR Q2MaterialsOA

This study aimed at evaluating the visible light mediated antimicrobial and osteogenic applications of noble metal, such as gold (Au) and platinum (Pt) coated titania (TiO2) nanotubes (NTs). In this study, the Au and Pt nanoparticles (NPs) were deposited on anodized 100 nm TiO2 NTs by ion plasma sputtering. The Au and Pt NPs were mainly deposited on the top surface layer of TiO2 NTs and showed light absorbance peaks around the 470 and 600 nm visible light region used in this study, as seen from

Educational expansion and the inequality of pay in Brazil and Korea
Young‐Bum Park

This chapter provides a comparative analysis of the educational systems in Korea and Brazil. It finds that a substantial proportion of the marked difference between Brazil and Korea in the inequality of pay is attributable to differences in their educational policy regime. The labour market consequences of slow educational expansion in Brazil during the 1970s and 1980s were disequalising: increases in the demand for skilled labour offset increases in the supply of skilled labour, so that the rel

Union/Nonunion Wage Differentials In the Korean Manufacturing Sector
Young‐Bum Park
SJR Q2International Economic Journal

This paper estimates union/nonunion wage differentials of male blue collar workers in the Korean manufacturing sector taking the sample selectivity problem into account. The results of this paper show that (1) workers in the union sector are paid more than the equivalent workers in the nonunion sector; (2) there exist different structures of wage determination in the union and nonunion sectors; and (3) the estimated union/nonunion wage differential obtained from separate union and nonunion wage

The purposes of this study are to confirm the role of Fibroblast Growth Factor-2 (FGF-2) in bone regeneration by adding various concentrations of FGF-2 to the collagen membrane and applying it to the Biphasic Calcium Phosphate (BCP) bone graft site for guided bone regeneration, to explore the potential of collagen membrane as FGF-2 carrier, and to determine the optimum FGF concentration for enhancement of bone regeneration. Four bone defects of 8 mm in diameter were created in 18 New Zealand rab

The Financial Crisis and Foreign Workers in Korea
Young‐Bum Park
SJR Q2Asian and Pacific migration journal

Since the financial crisis started, the employment situation in Korea has been worsening. In a span of six months, about one million people lost their jobs. By offering the amnesty program to undocumented foreign workers right after the IMF measures took effect, the Korean government revealed its view of foreign workers as a buffer against economic ups and downs. About one-third of the illegal workers left Korea under this program. However, many Korean firms are still having difficulties in hiri

SJR Q2Microscopy Research and TechniqueOA

Biological reactions between biomaterials and surrounding tissues, analyzed by histology, may be important predictors of clinical healing pattern and selection of slide preparation techniques requires a careful consideration regarding sample properties. In this study, we compared histology of bone specimens prepared with or without decalcification and performed histological and histomorphometrical assessments. For the histological evaluation, one-wall intrabony defects were created around the ma

The aim of this study was to investigate the behavior of dental-derived human mesenchymal stem cells (d-hMSCs) in response to differently surface-treated implants and to evaluate the effect of d-hMSCs on local osteogenesis around an implant in vivo. d-hMSCs derived from alveolar bone were established and cultured on machined, sandblasted and acid-etched (SLA)-treated titanium discs with and without osteogenic induction medium. Their morphological and osteogenic potential was assessed by scanning
