About the Lab
Professor Young Hun Choi's research lab specializes in biomedical nanotechnology and molecular imaging, with a focus on developing advanced polymeric gene delivery systems for targeted therapy and diagnostic applications. The lab investigates the role of key signaling molecules, such as PDE3B, in metabolic regulation and disease pathogenesis, particularly in insulin signaling and glucose homeostasis. Additionally, the lab applies deep learning and medical imaging techniques to improve diagnostic accuracy in pediatric radiology, especially for detecting orthopedic injuries and monitoring contrast agent retention in the brain. These interdisciplinary efforts integrate molecular biology, nanomaterials, and artificial intelligence to advance precision medicine.

15Cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterase 3B (PDE3B) has been suggested to be critical for mediating insulin/IGF-1 inhibition of cAMP signaling in adipocytes, liver, and pancreatic beta cells. In Pde3b-KO adipocytes we found decreased adipocyte size, unchanged insulin-stimulated phosphorylation of protein kinase B and activation of glucose uptake, enhanced catecholamine-stimulated lipolysis and insulin-stimulated lipogenesis, and blocked insulin inhibition of catecholamine-stimulated lipolysis. To investigate the delivery of DNA into cells, lactose-poly(ethylene glycol)-grafted poly-L-lysine (Lac-PEG-PLL) polymers were synthesized as polymeric gene carriers. The new synthetic carriers, varying the substitution ratio of lactose-poly(ethylene glycol) (lactose-PEG), were characterized by NMR spectroscopy and size-exclusion chromatography. Electrophoretic mobility assay confirmed that the new gene carrier makes a complex with plasmid DNA. The attached poly(ethylene glycol) gives better sol
OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to develop a dual-input convolutional neural network (CNN)-based deep-learning algorithm that utilizes both anteroposterior (AP) and lateral elbow radiographs for the automated detection of pediatric supracondylar fracture in conventional radiography, and assess its feasibility and diagnostic performance. MATERIALS AND METHODS: To develop the deep-learning model, 1266 pairs of AP and lateral elbow radiographs examined between January 2013 and December 2017 at a singl
The physicochemical properties and gene transfer ability of lactose-polyethylene glycol-grafted poly-L-lysine (Lac-PEG-PLL) were investigated. A dye displacement assay showed that plasmid DNA self-assembled with Lac-PEG-PLL, and condensation began at a <1:1 charge ratio of plasmid DNA to polymer. In atomic force microscopy, spontaneously assembled Lac-PEG-PLL/DNA complexes revealed a compact structure, with a size of about 100-200 nm. Circular dichroism spectra of Lac-PEG-PLL/DNA complexes revea
PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to identify the signal intensity (SI) changes in the dentate nucleus (DN) and the globus pallidus (GP) on unenhanced T1-weighted magnetic resonance (MR) images after multiple administration of gadolinium-based contrast agents (GBCAs) in children and compare those changes between linear and macrocyclic GBCAs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study was approved by the institutional review board and the requirement for informed consent was waived. We iden
Widespread use of fetal ultrasonography is accompanied by more frequent detection of antenatal hydronephrosis. Therefore, sonographic evaluation of neonates with a history of antenatal hydronephrosis is becoming more widespread. As an initial postnatal non-invasive imaging modality, ultrasonography is used to screen for persistence of hydronephrosis, determine the level and severity of obstruction, and contribute to appropriate diagnosis and treatment. This review aims to provide a practical ove
OBJECTIVE: This study was designed to assess the usefulness of transperineal ultrasonography (US) for the determination of imperforate anus (IA) type. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From January 2000 to December 2004, 46 of 193 patients with an IA underwent transperineal US prior to corrective surgery. Sonographic findings were reviewed to identify the presence of internal fistulas and to determine "distal rectal pouch to perineum (P-P)" distances. IA types were determined based on the sonographic findi
