About the Lab
Professor Young Nam Yoon's research lab specializes in regenerative vascular medicine and bioengineering, focusing on the development of small-diameter artificial blood vessels using 3D bioprinting technologies. The lab investigates the use of autologous mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) differentiated into endothelial-like cells to enhance graft patency and reduce restenosis. Key research directions include optimizing hemodynamic conditions such as pulsatile flow for vascular cell function and evaluating novel perivascular drug delivery systems to prevent restenosis after vascular surgery. The lab integrates clinical cardiology with advanced biomaterials and tissue engineering to improve outcomes in patients with coronary artery disease and vascular insufficiency.

15BACKGROUND: Cardiopulmonary bypass may exacerbate myocardial damage in compromised left ventricles. Early and mid-term outcomes of off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting (OPCAB) vs on-pump coronary artery bypass grafting (On-pump CABG) were compared in patients with poor left ventricular dysfunction, using an analysis of a propensity score matching. METHODS AND RESULTS: Between December 2000 and November 2005, 1,473 patients underwent isolated coronary artery bypass grafting in our institute a
Artificial vessels capable of long-term patency are essential clinical tools in vascular surgery that involves small vessels. On-going attempts to develop artificial vessels that complements restenosis have not been entirely successful. Here, we report on the fabrication of small-sized artificial vessels using a three-dimensional bio-printer. The fabrication employed biodegradable polycaprolactone and autologous MSCs harvested from the bone-marrow of canines. The MSCs were cultured and different
OBJECTIVE: To determine whether plasma cystatin C and creatinine levels after isolated off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting (OPCAB) are predictive of postoperative renal dysfunction and clinical outcomes. METHODS: Between January 2008 and December 2013, 1033 who underwent isolated OPCAB were recruited. The patients were divided into three groups according to the preoperative level of cystatin C: low (0.83 mg/L>), mid (0.83-1.13 mg/L) and high (1.13 mg/L<). The endpoints of all-cause mortalit
Replacement of small-sized vessels is still challenging. This study is aimed at investigating the possibility of small-sized artificial vessels made by 3-dimensional bioprinting and the effect of pulsatile flow on bMSC-derived endothelial-like cells. Cells were harvested from rabbit bone marrow and primary cultured with or without growth factors. Endothelial differentiation was confirmed by the Matrigel tube formation assay, Western blot, and qRT-PCR. In addition, embedment of endothelial-like c
Restenosis at a vascular anastomosis site is a major cause of graft failure and is difficult to prevent by conventional treatment. Perivascular drug delivery has advantages as drugs can be diffused to tunica media and subintima while minimizing the direct effect on endothelium. This in vivo study investigated the comparative effectiveness of paclitaxel, sirolimus, and sunitinib using a perivascular biodegradable microneedle cuff. A total of 31 New Zealand white rabbits were used. Rhodamine was u
BACKGROUND: Periprocedural treatment with high-dose statins is known to have cardioprotective and pleiotropic effects, such as anti-thrombotic and anti-inflammatory actions. We aimed to assess the efficacy of high-dose rosuvastatin loading in patients with stable angina undergoing off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting (OPCAB). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 142 patients with stable angina who were scheduled to undergo surgical myocardial revascularization were randomized to receive either
Hybrid arch repair conferred a significantly lower incidence of pulmonary complications, without benefitting perioperative mortality and stroke. However, open repair proved more reliable, showing greater durability. Long-term investigations are needed to confirm the viability and safety of hybrid repair as an alternative treatment in this setting.
