About the Lab

Professor Young Sik Choi's research lab specializes in high-resolution molecular spectroscopy and unimolecular reaction dynamics, focusing on highly vibrationally excited states of small polyatomic molecules such as HFCO. The lab employs advanced laser techniques—particularly stimulated emission pumping (SEP) and laser-induced fluorescence—to investigate intramolecular vibrational energy redistribution, state-specific unimolecular dissociation rates, and the role of specific vibrational modes in chemical reactivity. A key focus is understanding the dynamics of energy flow and dissociation pathways in molecules near and above their dissociation thresholds, with implications for reaction kinetics and energy partitioning in complex systems. More recently, the lab has expanded into biomedical applications, examining oxidative stress and inflammatory biomarkers in follicular fluid to understand their impact on IVF outcomes in endometriosis patients.

Quasistable extreme motion vibrational states of HFCO above its dissociation threshold
Young Sik Choi, C. Bradley Moore
SJR Q1The Journal of Chemical Physics

The anharmonic mixing of highly excited vibrational states of HFCO above its dissociation threshold is studied by stimulated emission pumping spectroscopy. At 0.05-cm−1 resolution, individual molecular eigenstates were resolved and state mixings observed by the distribution of oscillator strength to nearby dark states of the background. Most of the zero-order vibrational levels observed in the energy range between 13 000 and 23 000 cm−1 are assigned to long Franck–Condon-allowed progressions of

State-specific unimolecular reaction dynamics of HFCO. I. Dissociation rates
Young Sik Choi, C. Bradley Moore
SJR Q1The Journal of Chemical Physics

Rovibrationally resolved unimolecular reaction rates of highly vibrationally excited HFCO (S0) are measured and found to be strongly state specific in the energy range of 14 500 cm−1–23 000 cm−1. HFCO molecules are excited to single rovibrational levels in the tunneling region by stimulated emission pumping (SEP) and the dissociation rate of each level is measured by monitoring the temporal evolution of its population by laser-induced fluorescence. The dissociation rates increase by a factor of

SJR Q1ReproductionOA

The aim of this study was to compare intrafollicular biomarkers of thiol-redox system and chronic inflammation in infertile patients with and without endometriosis, and examine correlations between biomarkers and IVF outcomes. The study included 65 patients receiving IVF: 31 patients with endometriosis vs 34 patients without endometriosis. Follicular fluid (FF) was obtained from a single-dominant follicle during oocyte retrieval and stored at -70 °C. Malondialdehyde, superoxide dismutase, glutat

Evidence for mode specific dynamics in the stimulated emission pumping spectra of HFCO
Young Sik Choi, C. Bradley Moore
SJR Q1The Journal of Chemical Physics

Stimulated emission pumping spectra of HFCO in a pulsed jet at 0.2 cm−1 resolution in the range of 13 000 to 23 000 cm−1 are reported. Above the dissociation threshold, ≊14 000 cm−1, linewidths vary from 0.15 to 2.0 cm−1 for S0 vibrational levels within an energy range of a few hundreds of cm−1 . Substantial vibrational mode dependence of intramolecular vibrational energy redistribution and/or dissociation rates is likely.

State-specific unimolecular dissociation dynamics of HFCO. II. CO rotational distribution and Doppler widths
Young Sik Choi, C. Bradley Moore
SJR Q1The Journal of Chemical PhysicsOA

Rovibrational state distributions and Doppler widths of CO fragments formed from unimolecular dissociation of HFCO in its ground electronic state are measured by vacuum ultraviolet laser-induced fluorescence, following state-selective preparation of the molecule in a single quantum state in the energy region of 2000 to 3000 cm−1 above the dissociation threshold by stimulated emission pumping. CO fragments are rotationally hot and distributed over J≤15 to J=63 with distributions peaking at J=45 t

The regeneration potential of implantable organ model hydrogels is applied to treat a loss of ovarian endocrine function in women experiencing menopause and/or cancer therapy. A rat ovariectomy model is used to harvest autologous ovary cells while subsequently producing a layer-by-layer form of follicle spheroids. Implantation of a microchannel network hydrogel with cell spheroids [vascularized hydrogel with ovarian spheroids (VHOS)] into an ischemic hindlimb of ovariectomized rats significantly

BACKGROUND: Insulin-like growth factors (IGF) and their binding proteins (IGFBP) play a major role in the autocrine and paracrine regulation of folliculogenesis. This is the first study that has compared follicular fluid (FF) IGF-I, IGF-II, IGFBP-3, IGFBP-4 and pregnancy-associated plasma protein (PAPP)-A concentrations, and their ratios, to investigate whether there was any difference in the intrafollicular microenvironment between the GnRH agonist (GnRHa) and antagonist (GnRHant) protocols for

SJR Q1Frontiers in EndocrinologyOA

Background: Repair of DNA double strand break (DSB) is an important mechanism for maintaining genetic stability during a DNA damage event. Although, a growing body of recent evidence suggests that DNA DSBs and related repair mechanisms may be important in ovarian aging and in various cancers, there are few reports in endometriosis. We, therefore, examined expression levels of genes pertaining to DNA DSB repair in patients with endometriosis to assess the potential effects on ovarian reser

The levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system (LNG-IUS) is effective in the treatment of dysmenorrhea associated with adenomyosis. However, the mechanism of pain relief of LNG-IUS in patients with adenomyosis is unclear. We aimed to investigate the effects of LNG-IUS on the expression of nerve growth factor (NGF) and its receptors, NGFR p75 and TrkA in patients with adenomyosis. Endometrial and myometrial tissues were prepared from 17 LNG-IUS-treated patients and 15 hormonally untreated patie

Stimulated-emission pumping for state-selective initiation of unimolecular reactions
Young Sik Choi, Penny Teal, C. Bradley Moore
SJR Q2Journal of the Optical Society of America B

Stimulated-emission pumping is successfully applied to the study of unimolecular dissociation dynamics of HFCO → HF + CO in a pulsed jet. Dissociative levels of the ground electronic state are prepared by stimulated-emission pumping, and the CO fragments formed from these levels are probed by vacuum-ultraviolet laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy. The rotational energy distribution of the CO fragments indicates modest differences between the dissociation dynamics of HFCO and those of H2CO. H
