About the Lab

Professor Youngchul Choi's research lab specializes in ophthalmic biomaterials and intraocular lens (IOL) technology, with a focus on improving visual outcomes and patient quality of life following cataract surgery. The lab investigates advanced IOL designs—particularly extended depth of focus (EDOF) and multifocal IOLs—comparing their optical performance, biocompatibility, and clinical tolerance to refractive errors. Research also extends to dry eye disease (DES) therapeutics, evaluating novel agents like Clacier for symptom relief and long-term management. The lab employs both clinical trials and standardized optical bench testing to evaluate IOL performance under real-world conditions.

Microbial contamination of multiply used preservative-free artificial tears packed in reclosable containers
M S Kim, Chul Young Choi, J M Kim, H R Chung, H Y Woo
SJR Q1British Journal of Ophthalmology

Preservative-free artificial tears in reclosable containers are at risk of contamination in a daily and multiple use setting, especially in patients with a poor administering technique, which is associated with fingertip touch and advanced age.

Prospective comparative study of tolerance to refractive errors after implantation of extended depth of focus and monofocal intraocular lenses with identical aspheric platform in Korean population
Hyeck-Soo Son, Seong Ho Kim, Gerd U. Auffarth, Chul Young Choi
SJR Q2BMC OphthalmologyOA

BACKGROUND: To evaluate the clinical outcomes of extended depth of focus (EDOF) and monofocal intraocular lenses (IOLs) that share identical aspheric platform and compare their visual acuity tolerance to postoperative refractive errors. METHODS: This non-randomized, prospective comparative study included 120 eyes undergoing cataract surgery with implantation of either Tecnis ZCB00 IOL (Abbott Medical Optics Inc., Santa Ana, CA) (monofocal group: 60 eyes of 30 patients) or Tecnis Symfony IOL (Abb

The Effect of Cataract Surgery on Diurnal Intraocular Pressure Fluctuation
Kwan Soo Kim, Joon Mo Kim, Ki Ho Park, Chul Young Choi, Hae Ran Chang
SJR Q1Journal of Glaucoma

We found a significant decrease in IOP after cataract surgery in nonglaucoma patients. However, change of diurnal IOP fluctuation after surgery was not statistically different. These results can be used as baseline data for diurnal IOP fluctuation studies in glaucoma patients after cataract surgery.

SJR Q2BMC OphthalmologyOA

BACKGROUND: To experimentally compare the optical performance of two different Extended-Depth-of-Focus (EDOF) intraocular lenses (IOLs) using a standardized optical bench set-up. METHODS: In this experimental study, following IOLs were assessed: the TECNIS® Symfony ZXR00 (Johnson&Johnson, Santa Ana, USA) and the AT LARA 829MP (Carl Zeiss Meditec, Jena, Germany) IOLs. The through-focus modulation transfer function (MTF) values were measured at a spatial frequency of 50 lp/mm and at aperture sizes

SJR Q2BMC OphthalmologyOA

BACKGROUND: To compare the clinical outcomes of bilateral implantation of enhanced intermediate function intraocular lenses (IOLs) and standard monofocal IOLs. METHODS: In this prospective, randomized, comparative controlled study, we compared the visual outcomes of patients who underwent bilateral cataract surgery at the Kangbuk Samsung Hospital, Sungkyunkwan University School of Medicine, with either enhanced monofocal IOLs (Tecnis Eyhance, ICB00, Johnson and Johnson Vision Care, Inc) (Group 1

The Value of Initial Ionized Calcium as a Predictor of Mortality and Triage Tool in Adult Trauma Patients
최영철, 황성연
http://kmbase.medric.or.kr/Main.aspx?d=KMBASE&m=VIEW&i=0191120080230040700

Ionized hypocalcemia is a common finding in critically ill patients, but the relationship between ionized hypocalcemia and mortality risk in trauma patients has not been well established. The aim of this study was to assess the usefulness of initial ionized calcium (iCa) in predicting mortality in the trauma population, and evaluate its superiority over the three other triage tools: base deficit, systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) score, and triage-revised trauma score (t-RTS). A pro

SJR Q1European Journal of Preventive Cardiology

AIMS: The associations of visual impairment (VI) with cardio-metabolic risk factors have been reported but its association with cardiovascular mortality remains uncertain. Therefore, we evaluated the association of visual acuity (VA) with overall, injury-related, and cardiovascular mortality. METHODS AND RESULTS: A cohort study was performed in 580 746 Korean adults (average age, 39.7 years) who were followed for a median of 8.1 years (maximum, 16 years). Presenting VA was measured by the Early
