About the Lab
Professor Youngmi Lee's research lab focuses on ion channel biology, particularly the role of transient receptor potential (TRP) channels in physiological and pathological processes. Her work explores TRP channel function in gastrointestinal and skin tissues, investigating their involvement in cellular signaling, inflammation, and responses to environmental stimuli such as heat, UV radiation, and chemical agonists. The lab also examines psychosocial and emotional aspects of medical education, particularly in the context of anatomy dissection and professional identity formation. These interdisciplinary studies bridge molecular physiology with clinical and educational outcomes.

15We investigated which transient receptor potential (TRP) channel is responsible for the nonselective cation channel (NSCC) activated by carbachol (CCh) in murine stomach with RT-PCR and the electrophysiological method. All seven types of TRP mRNA were detected in murine stomach with RT-PCR. When each TRP channel was expressed, the current-voltage relationship of mTRP5 was most similar to that recorded in murine gastric myocytes. mTRP5 showed a conductance order of Cs(+) > K(+) > Na(+), similar t
Unresolved conflicts among healthcare professionals can lead to difficult patient care consequences. This scoping review examines the current healthcare literature that reported sources and consequences of conflict associated with individual, interpersonal, and organisational factors. We identified 99 articles published between 2001 and 2015 from PubMed, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, and Excerpta Medical Database. Most reviewed studies relied on healthcare professiona
Transient receptor potential vanilloid type 1 (TRPV1) is a molecular sensor for detecting adverse stimuli, such as capsaicin, heat, and acid. TRPV1 has been localized in keratinocytes and is suggested to be a mediator of heat-induced matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1). With regard to the multimodal activation of TRPV1, we hypothesize that TRPV1 might also mediate UV-induced MMP-1 in keratinocytes. In HaCaT, a human keratinocyte cell line, we initially confirmed capsaicin-induced membrane current
BACKGROUND: It has been well reported that the emotional experiences of medical students in the gross anatomy laboratory could have significant impacts on their professional identity formation. This qualitative study aimed to investigate students' emotions towards cadaver dissection and the educational role of memorial ceremonies. METHODS: A total of 37 students from eight teams were recruited in the team-based dissection course during two consecutive academic years (2016 and 2017) at one medica
Guidelines for clinical practice are intended to indicate preferred approaches to medical problems as established by scientifically valid research. Double blind, placebo-controlled studies are preferable, but reports and expert review articles are also utilized in a thorough review of the literature conducted through the National Library of Medicine's MEDLINE. When only data that will not withstand objective scrutiny are available, a recommendation is identified as a consensus of experts. Guidel
The prognosis and natural history of primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) have improved significantly during the last few decades. Patients are diagnosed at earlier stages, are more likely to be asymptomatic at diagnosis, and are more likely to receive medical treatment. The survival of asymptomatic patients is longer than the median survival of symptomatic patients. The natural history of PBC has been assessed in the presence of effective therapy, ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA). Evidence suggests that
Transient receptor potential vanilloid type 1 (TRPV1) is activated by various stimuli including capsaicin, heat and acid. While TRPV1 has been localized in the epidermis, little is known about the physiological role of TRPV1 in the skin, especially in skin ageing. In this study, we investigated the effect of acute UV irradiation on TRPV1 expression in human skin and the changes in TRPV1 mRNA and protein in intrinsic ageing and photoageing using human sun-protected (upper inner arm) and sun-expos
BACKGROUND: Matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1) is considered a key initiator of collagen degradation in inflammatory responses. A heat-gated channel, transient receptor potential vanilloid type 1 (TRPV1), induces release of proinflammatory mediators. TRPV1 channels have been localized to the epidermis and we have recently suggested that they act as mediators of heat-induced MMP-1. The aim of this study was to investigate the signaling of TRPV1 in MMP-1 regulation by heat shock in human epidermal
PURPOSE: Given the increasing significance and potential impact of artificial intelligence (AI) technology on health care delivery, there is an increasing demand to integrate AI into medical school curricula. This study aimed to define medical AI competencies and identify the essential competencies for medical graduates in South Korea. METHOD: An initial Delphi survey conducted in 2022 involving 4 groups of medical AI experts (n = 28) yielded 42 competency items. Subsequently, an online question
Colchicine may be effective treatment in some symptomatic patients with PBC who respond incompletely to UDCA alone or in combination with methotrexate. Colchicine may be tried in such patients.
