About the Lab
Professor Youngmok Sim's research lab specializes in thoracic and cardiothoracic diseases, with a strong focus on pulmonary and mediastinal tumors, including thymic epithelial tumors and nontuberculous mycobacterial lung disease. The lab investigates the radiological and clinical predictors of disease progression and treatment outcomes, particularly through advanced imaging techniques such as high-resolution CT and MRI. It also explores environmental risk factors, such as long-term air pollution exposure, in relation to lung cancer incidence. We reviewed our experience with resection of recurrent lung cancer to evaluate the benefit and risk of the procedure. From December 1994 to December 2003, 29 consecutive patients underwent pulmonary resections for recurrent lung cancer. This study was undertaken to examine prognosis after resection for M1 disease in squamous cell esophageal carcinoma. Fifty-six patients with M1 esophageal cancer underwent esophageal resection with two or three-field nodal dissection from 1994 to 2001. Operative mortality occurred in 3 patients.
