About the Lab
Professor Youngrok Choi's research lab specializes in advanced surgical techniques and outcomes in liver transplantation and hepatectomy, with a strong focus on minimizing invasiveness and improving patient safety. The lab investigates the learning curves and comparative outcomes of laparoscopic versus open donor right hepatectomy, aiming to optimize surgical training and adoption of minimally invasive methods. Additionally, the lab explores anatomical and virological factors influencing biliary complications and graft survival, particularly in hepatitis B-positive donor liver transplantation. The integration of advanced imaging and machine learning techniques for surgical planning and video retrieval further extends their interdisciplinary approach to surgical innovation.

15This study aims to compare the early outcomes between pure laparoscopic living donor right hepatectomy (PLDRH) and open living donor right hepatectomy (ODRH) after those learning curve. Our analysis was based on 78 consecutive cases of living liver donor, who underwent right hepatectomy, of which 43 underwent ODRH and 35 PLDRH. The learning curve for each group was analyzed. Donor characteristics were comparable between the two groups. Two donors in the PLDRH required conversion to an open due t
The complexity classification outperformed the major/minor classification for predicting the surgical difficulty of liver resection.
This paper presents a novel framework to extract highly compact and discriminative features for face video retrieval tasks using the deep convolutional neural network (CNN). The face video retrieval task is to find the videos containing the face of a specific person from a database with a face image or a face video of the same person as a query. A key challenge is to extract discriminative features with small storage space from face videos with large intra-class variations caused by different an
The anatomy of the RPBD of the donor influenced the biliary outcome in the recipients. A short RBD and a long caudal segment of the RPBD of the donor were significant risk factors for biliary complications in LDLT.
This study reports our experience using deceased donor liver grafts from HBsAg-positive donors. We performed eight cases of liver transplantation (LT) using grafts from deceased HBsAg-positive donors between November 2005 and October 2010. The median age of donors was 48 years (range: 26-64). HBV DNA in the serum of donors ranged from 44 to 395 IU/ml, but HBeAg in all donors was negative. Preoperative laboratory and liver biopsy samples revealed the absence of definitive cirrhotic features and h
BACKGROUND: This study evaluated the timing of safe introduction of total laparoscopic donor right hepatectomy (TLDRH) based on outcomes of laparoscopic major hepatectomy (LMH). METHODS: The data of 1013 consecutive patients who underwent laparoscopic liver resection from 2003 to 2017 were reviewed; the cumulative sum method was used to evaluate the learning curve of LMH. Patients were divided into 3 groups according to the timing of introduction of TLDRH (since 2010) and learning curve of LMH.
Living donor hepatectomy is now a well-established surgical procedure. However, a large abdominal incision is still required, which results in a large permanent scar, especially for a right liver graft. This report reviews our techniques of minimally invasive or minimal incisional donor hepatectomy using a transverse incision.Twenty-five living donors underwent right hepatectomy with a transverse incision and 484 donors with a conventional incision between April 2007 and December 2012. Among the
Purpose: We evaluated the heterogeneity of steatosis in living donor livers to determine its regional differences. Methods: Between June 2011 and February 2012, 81 liver donors were selected. Fat fraction was estimated using magnetic resonance triple-echo chemical shifting gradient imaging in 13 different regions: segment 1 (S1), S2, S3, and each peripheral and deep region of S4, S5, S6, S7, and S8. Results: There were differences (range, 3.2%-5.3%) in fat fractions between each peripheral and d
Background The aim of this study was to investigate the current status and identify any existing problems in the allocation system of liver transplantation (LT) for children in Korea. Methods The information for the period between January 2006 and March 2012 contained in the Korean Network for Organ Sharing (KONOS) database, and the 2008 and 2010 annual reports from KONOS were analyzed. Detailed information about split LT (SLT) was analyzed using the SLT database which contains data collected si
Fault diagnosis is crucial to guarantee safe operation and extend the operating time while preventing the thermal runaway of the lithium-ion battery. This study presents a data-driven thermal runaway diagnosis framework where Bayesian optimization techniques are applied to optimize the hyperparameter of various machine learning techniques. We use different machine learning models such as support vector machine, naive Bayes, decision tree ensemble, and multi-layer perceptron to estimate a high li
BACKGROUND: Single-incision laparoscopic liver resection (SILLR) is still challenging due to the unstable surgical view, the crowding instruments and its crossover. In this study, we present a new option of solo SILLR for various liver tumours in order to overcome those difficulties. METHODS: Solo SILLR is indicated for liver tumours located in the left liver or in the superficial right liver. Data for 54 consecutive patients, who underwent solo SILLR between October 2015 and October 2018, were
Surgery yielded greater growth improvement than dietary management. However, after PCS, metabolic abnormalities remained unresolved, and the de novo HCA rate was high. Portacaval shunting can be used to improve growth in GSD type I patients when LT is not possible, but close observation for metabolic abnormalities and HCA is essential.
