About the Lab

Professor Youngseop Eom's research lab specializes in ophthalmic biometrics and refractive surgery, with a strong focus on optimizing intraocular lens (IOL) power calculation for cataract and phakic IOL implantation. The lab investigates corneal biomechanics, meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), and post-surgical visual disturbances such as dysphotopsia, integrating clinical studies with advanced optical modeling. Key research directions include improving surgical outcomes through personalized IOL formula selection, understanding systemic factors in retinal diseases like central serous chorioretinopathy, and evaluating non-invasive interventions such as eyelid hygiene for postoperative ocular surface health. The lab combines clinical ophthalmology with quantitative biometric analysis to enhance precision in refractive and cataract surgery.

SJR Q1CorneaOA

In patients with obstructive MGD, MGL and meibum grade in the lower eyelids were significantly greater than those of the upper eyelids. Although MGL and meibum quality showed a positive correlation with each other, TBUT and corneal staining score were significantly correlated with only meibum grade, and not with MGL.

Systemic Factors Associated with Central Serous Chorioretinopathy in Koreans
Youngsub Eom, Jaeryung Oh, Seong‐Woo Kim, Kuhl Huh
SJR Q2Korean Journal of OphthalmologyOA

PURPOSE: To investigate systemic factors associated with central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC). METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 113 Korean patients who were diagnosed with CSC and who underwent history taking with a specialized questionnaire for CSC. They were matched for age and gender at a ratio of 1 : 3 to 339 normal controls. Normal controls were consecutively selected from a database at the Health Promotion Center. PURPOSE: To evaluate the incidence of central hole-induced ring-shaped dysphotopsia after posterior chamber phakic implantable collamer lens (ICL) with central hole (hole ICL) implantation and to investigate the causes of central hole-induced dysphotopsia. METHODS: The clinical study enrolled 29 eyes of 15 consecutive myopic patients implanted with hole ICL. The incidence of ring-shaped dysphotopsia after hole ICL implantation was evaluated. In the experimental simulation study, non-sequential r

PURPOSE: To compare the prediction accuracy of algorithmic intraocular lens (IOL) power calculation formula selection method using conventional formulas (Haigis, Hoffer Q, Holladay 1, SRK/T and/or Barrett Universal II) based on keratometry (K), anterior chamber depth (ACD) and axial length (AL). METHODS: A total of 1653 patients (1653 eyes) implanted with Tecnis ZCB00 IOL during cataract surgery were enrolled in this study. Purpose: To evaluate the accuracy of IOL power calculation using adjusted corneal power according to the posterior/anterior corneal curvature radii ratio. Methods: Nine hundred twenty-eight eyes from 928 reference subjects and 158 eyes from 158 cataract patients who underwent phacoemulsification surgery were enrolled. Adjusted corneal power of cataract patients was calculated using the fictitious refractive index that was obtained from the geometric mean posterior/anterior corneal curvature radi

SJR Q1Scientific ReportsOA

The purpose of this randomized clinical trial is to evaluate the effect of eyelid hygiene on subjective symptoms, anterior blepharitis, and meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) after cataract surgery. Subjects with obstructive MGD who underwent cataract surgery were randomly divided into two groups. In the eyelid hygiene group, eyelid hygiene was performed twice a day for 10 days from 3 days before to 1 week after cataract surgery. The control group did not perform eyelid hygiene. Purpose: To investigate the ocular immune response following exposure to airborne titanium dioxide (TiO2) microparticles. Methods: Rats in the TiO2-exposed group (n = 10) were exposed to TiO2 particles for 2 hours twice daily for 5 days, while the controls (n = 10) were not. Corneal staining score and tear lactic dehydrogenase (LDH) activity were measured to evaluate ocular surface damage, serum immunoglobulin (Ig) G and E were assayed by using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and the size of

SJR Q2Korean Journal of OphthalmologyOA

The majority of subjects were classified as having the obvious obstructive subtype of MGD, and 19.4% had upper and lower eyelids that were different subtypes. Eyelid hygiene was the most prescribed treatment for MGD patients, and treatment patterns were mostly determined based on the subtype of the upper eyelids.
