About the Lab

Professor Youngsoo Jang's research lab focuses on environmental and behavioral economics, with a strong emphasis on sustainable resource management, consumer behavior in food markets, and the macroeconomic implications of policy interventions. The lab investigates greenhouse gas emissions in fisheries, the impact of school closures on intergenerational mobility, and the role of branding and traceability in seafood markets. It also explores how tax and transfer policies affect labor supply and economic fluctuations, particularly in heterogeneous household contexts. The research integrates econometric modeling, consumer survey analysis, and general equilibrium frameworks to address real-world economic and environmental challenges.

Fuel Use and Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Offshore Fisheries of the Republic of Korea
Jeong A Park, C Gardner, Myo-In Chang, Do-Hoon Kim, Young-Soo Jang
SJR Q1PLoS ONEOA

Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions from the offshore fisheries industry in the Republic of Korea (Korea) were examined in response to growing concerns about global warming and the contribution of emissions from different industrial sectors. Fuel usage and GHG emissions (CO2, CH4, N2O) were analysed using the 'Tier 1' method provided by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) from the offshore fishery, which is the primary domestic seafood production sector in Korea. In 2013, fuel usage

Aggregate and Intergenerational Implications of School Closures: A Quantitative Assessment
Young-Soo Jang, Minchul Yum
SJR Q1American Economic Journal Macroeconomics

This paper quantitatively investigates the medium- and long-term macroeconomic and distributional consequences of school closures through intergenerational channels. The model economy is a dynastic overlapping-generations general equilibrium model in which schools, in the form of public education investments, complement parental investments in producing children’s human capital. We find that unexpected school closure shocks have long-lasting adverse effects on macroeconomic aggregates and reduce

Tax‐and‐transfer progressivity and business cycles
Young-Soo Jang, Takeki Sunakawa, Minchul Yum
SJR Q1Quantitative EconomicsOA

This paper studies how tax‐and‐transfer progressivity influences aggregate fluctuations when interacting with household heterogeneity. Using a simple static model of the extensive margin labor supply, we analytically characterize how a degree of progressivity influences differential labor supply responses to aggregate conditions across heterogeneous households. We then build a quantitative dynamic general equilibrium model with both idiosyncratic and aggregate productivity shocks and show that i

CREDIT, DEFAULT, AND OPTIMAL HEALTH INSURANCE
Young-Soo Jang
SJR Q1International Economic Review

Abstract I study how credit and default affect optimal health insurance, constructing a life‐cycle model of health investment with a strategic default option on emergency room bills and financial debts. The model is calibrated to the U.S. economy and used to compare the optimal policy for Medicaid by the availability of the default option and credit. I find that strategic default induces the optimal policy to be more redistributive. With (Without) the option, the optimal income threshold for Med
