About the Lab

Professor Youngwhan Kim's research lab specializes in interventional radiology and image-guided interventions, focusing on minimally invasive treatments for liver and biliary diseases, venous thromboembolism, and gastrointestinal bleeding. The lab investigates advanced endovascular techniques such as BRTO and TIPS for managing portal hypertension, as well as percutaneous procedures for gallstone disease and biliary obstruction. A key emphasis is placed on improving diagnostic accuracy using medical imaging—particularly CT and PET/CT—and optimizing clinical outcomes through evidence-based interventional strategies.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Both balloon-occluded retrograde transvenous obliteration (BRTO) and transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) are considered effective treatments for gastric variceal bleeding (GVB). In this study, outcomes of these two procedures were compared in managing patients with GVB. METHODS: A total of 142 patients undergoing BRTO (n = 95) or TIPS (n = 47) between 2005 and 2012 at two tertiary centers were selected for retrospective review. RESULTS: Mean patient age (male

SJR Q1Korean Journal of RadiologyOA

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the technical feasibility and clinical efficacy of percutaneous transhepatic cholecystolithotomy under fluoroscopic guidance in high-risk surgical patients with acute cholecystitis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty-three consecutive patients of high surgical risk with acute calculous cholecystitis underwent percutaneous transhepatic gallstone removal under conscious sedation. The stones were extracted through the 12-Fr sheath using a Wittich nitinol stone basket under fluorosc

The present study suggests that CT is useful in differentiating torsed from uncomplicated BCT. Although CT findings are not specific for some patients, detection of certain CT findings could increase the diagnostic accuracy.

Lower extremity deep vein thrombosis is a serious medical condition that results in death or major disability due to pulmonary embolism or post-thrombotic syndrome. Proper diagnosis and treatment are warranted to improve symptoms and limb salvage. Early thrombus clearance rapidly resolves symptoms related to venous obstruction and can restore valve function; hence, it reduces the incidence of post-thrombotic syndrome. Recently, endovascular treatment has been established as a standard method for

Our study demonstrated that ALN/T SUV ratio together with ER status was an independent factor for predicting relapse in IDC with metastatic ALN. ALN/T SUV ratio on preoperative FDG PET/CT may be a useful marker for selecting IDC patients that need adjunct treatment to prevent recurrence.

Fish Bone as a Nidus for Stone Formation in the Common Bile Duct: Report of Two Cases

SJR Q1Korean Journal of RadiologyOA

We report two cases of common bile duct stone formed around a fish bone which migrated from the intestinal tract, along with their characteristic imaging findings. Two patients who had no history of previous operation were admitted because of cholangitis. Percutaneous transhepatic biliary drainage (PTBD) was performed and the cholangiogram showed filling defects with an unusually elongated shape in the common bile duct. After improvement of the cholangitic symptoms, the stones were removed throu

SJR Q1Journal of Clinical MedicineOA

The impact of incidentally identified diffuse thyroid FDG uptake on 18F-FDG PET/CT scan on the incidence of thyroid dysfunction remains unclear. We examined the association of diffuse thyroid FDG uptake with the development of thyroid dysfunction. This cohort study involved 39,098 Korean adults who were free of malignancy and thyroid disease at baseline and underwent regular health checkup examinations including an 18F-FDG whole body PET/CT scan, thyroid-stimulating hormone and free thyroxine. Korean Guidelines for Interventional Recanalization of Lower Extremity Arteries

SJR Q1Korean Journal of RadiologyOA

Peripheral arterial occlusive disease caused by atherosclerosis can present with intermittent claudication or critical limb ischemia. Proper diagnosis and management is warranted to improve symptoms and salvage limbs. With the introduction of new techniques and dedicated materials, endovascular recanalization is widely performed for the treatment of peripheral arterial occlusive disease because it is less invasive than surgery. However, there are various opinions regarding the appropriate indica

US-guided Percutaneous Transhepatic Biliary Drainage: Comparative Study of Right-sided and Left-sided Approach
Young Hwan Kim, Soon Joo
Journal of the Korean Radiological Society

Purpose: To compare the feasibility and safety of US-guided right and left percutaneous transhepatic biliary drainage (PTBD). Materials and Methods: Between March 1998 and May 1999, 32 patients underwent 36 US-guided right or left PTBD in referred order, alternatively. The causes of biliary obstruction were bile duct stone (n=2), bile duct carcinoma (n=10), carcinoma of the pancreas (n=9), GB carcinoma (n=7), metastasis to the porta hepatis (n=3), and carcinoma of the ampulla of vater (n=1).
