About the Lab

Professor Younsoo Chung's research lab focuses on advancing urological diagnostics and precision medicine, with a strong emphasis on prostate cancer detection and management. The lab investigates innovative imaging-guided biopsy techniques—such as transperineal and MRI-targeted biopsies—to improve diagnostic accuracy and reduce complications. It also explores genetic risk assessment through germline mutation screening in familial prostate cancer and examines antimicrobial resistance in both human and veterinary settings, highlighting One Health implications. The lab integrates clinical, molecular, and epidemiological approaches to address critical challenges in urological health, particularly in aging populations.

Shifting to transperineal prostate biopsy: A narrative review
Younsoo Chung, Sung Kyu Hong
SJR Q1Prostate InternationalOA

To address the limitations and challenges associated with transrectal (TR) biopsy and to present transperineal (TP) biopsy as a viable and potentially safer alternative to TR biopsy. Prostate cancer (PCa) is a significant global health concern. The prevalence of advanced-stage prostate cancer in Asia is higher than that in the United States, emphasizing the need for effective screening and diagnosis methods. The gold standard of diagnosis is a TR biopsy. However, it has limitations due to the ri

Impact of diagnostic ureteroscopy before radical nephroureterectomy on intravesical recurrence in patients with upper tract urothelial cancer
Younsoo Chung, Dong Hwan Lee, Minseung Lee, Hakju Kim, Sangchul Lee, Sung Kyu Hong, Seok‐Soo Byun, Sang Eun Lee, Jong Jin Oh
SJR Q1Investigative and Clinical UrologyOA

Preoperative diagnostic ureteroscopy before RNU was a significant factor for IVR. Therefore, we should carefully consider Pre-U before RNU for nonobvious ureteral lesions. These results should be validated in a prospective study.

Characterization of Veterinary Hospital-Associated Isolates of Enterococcus Species in Korea
정연수, 권가희, Sook Shin, 김재홍, 박용호, 윤장원

Possible cross-transmission of hospital-associated enterococci between human patients, medical staff, and hospital environments has been extensively studied. However, limitedinformation is available for veterinary hospital-associated Enterococcus isolates. This studyinvestigated the possibility of cross-transmission of antibiotic-resistant enterococci betweendog patients, their owners, veterinary staff, and hospital environments. Swab samples (n =46 5)were obtained from five veterinary hospitals

Evaluating prostate cancer diagnostic methods: The role and relevance of digital rectal examination in modern era
Younsoo Chung, Sung Kyu Hong
SJR Q1Investigative and Clinical UrologyOA

This review examines diagnostic methods for prostate cancer, focusing on the role of digital rectal examination (DRE) alongside modern advancements like prostate-specific antigen (PSA) testing, Prostate Health Index (PHI), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and prostate-specific membrane antigen positron emission tomography (PSMA-PET), particularly in the context of Korea's aging population and healthcare challenges. Technological advancements have significantly improved prostate cancer diagnosis

Risk stratification for repeat prostate biopsy: PI-RADS 3 lesions and the differential role of PSA density
Jungkeun Song, Jungwon Park, Hyungwoo Ahn, Sung Il Hwang, Hak Jong Lee, Younsoo Chung, Hyung Joon Kim, Hakmin Lee, Jong Jin Oh, Sangchul Lee, Seong Jin Jeong, Seok-Soo Byun
SJR Q1Prostate InternationalOA

PI-RADS 3 lesions represent a diagnostic challenge in repeat prostate biopsy. We investigated whether PI-RADS 3 independently predicts negative biopsy outcomes and how PSA density (PSAD) modifies cancer detection across PI-RADS categories. We retrospectively analyzed 684 patients who underwent repeat MRI-guided prostate biopsy between 2015 and 2022. PI-RADS scores, clinicopathologic variables, biopsy Gleason Scores, and radical prostatectomy findings were assessed. Univariate and multivariate lo

SJR Q1Prostate InternationalOA

High-P was significantly unfavorable with RT failure-free survival, OS, and CSS in patients who underwent RT after radical prostatectomy with concurrent HT. Seminal vesicle invasion, lymph node invasion, and the absence of PIN were identified as significant prognostic factors for RT failure.

Efficacy and Reliability of Mobile Uroflowmetry in Patients With Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia Undergoing Transurethral Resection: Prospective Multicenter Observational Pilot Validation Study
Sang Hun Song, Younsoo Chung, Hoyoung Ryu, Jeong Woo Lee, Sangchul Lee
SJR Q1Journal of Medical Internet ResearchOA

Background Accurate assessment of voiding patterns before and after surgery for lower urinary tract symptoms is critical in patient care, but it places heavy burdens on both the patient and the clinic. While methods for telemedicine have been devised, no technology for acoustic assessment of urinary patterns has been prospectively evaluated for clinical use. Objective This study aims to assess the precision of a mobile app–based uroflowmetry and compare it with in-office uroflowmetry measurement

To determine risk factors for urinary retention (UR) after robot-assisted radical cystectomy (RALC) with orthotopic neobladder diversion. A total of 269 patients who underwent RALC with orthotopic neobladder diversion from 2008 to 2019 at seven tertiary hospitals were retrospectively analyzed. There were 68 patients who had UR (UR arm) and 201 patients who did not have UR (no-UR arm). UR was defined as voiding dysfunction without catheterization or more than 100 mL of residual urine after voidin

Sang Hun Song, Jungwon Park, Younsoo Chung, Hakmin Lee, Jong Jin Oh, Hyunji Kim, Seok‐Soo Byun
Journal of Urologic OncologyOA

Purpose: This study aimed to assess the rate of germline variant detection following targeted cascade genetic testing among family members of prostate cancer (PCa) probands.Materials and Methods: Records of PCa patients with confirmed germline mutations and their family members recommended for cascade testing were retrospectively reviewed. Cascade testing for germline mutations identified in PCa probands was conducted among first-degree relatives (FDRs) and second-degree relatives. The rate of c

The present study investigated the prevalence and mechanisms of fluoroquinolone (FQ)/quinolone (Q) resistance in Escherichia (E.) coli isolates from companion animals, pet-owners, and non-pet-owners. A total of 63 E. coli isolates were collected from 104 anal swab samples, and 27 nalidixic acid (NA)-resistant isolates were identified. Of those, 10 showed ciprofloxacin (CIP) resistance. A plasmid-mediated Q resistance gene was detected in one isolate. Increased efflux pump activity, as measured b
