About the Lab

Professor Yujin Kim's research lab focuses on molecular oncology and translational cancer research, with a primary emphasis on understanding the pathogenic mechanisms of aggressive and rare cancers such as triple-negative/basal-like breast cancer, sarcomas, and solitary fibrous tumors. The lab investigates key oncogenic drivers like MET, NAB2-STAT6 fusions, and MDM2/CDK4 amplification to identify novel therapeutic targets and biomarkers. Additionally, the lab explores renal safety in antiviral therapy for chronic viral hepatitis, particularly hepatitis B and C, to improve long-term treatment outcomes. Their work integrates molecular pathology, functional genomics, and clinical correlation to advance precision oncology.

MET, a cell surface receptor for hepatocyte growth factor, is involved in the development of triple-negative/basal-like breast cancer (TNBC/BLBC). However, its utility as a therapeutic target in this subtype of breast cancer is poorly understood. To evaluate MET fully as a potential therapeutic target for TNBC/BLBC, we investigated the relationship between MET expression and clinical outcomes of patients with breast cancer and the functional effect of MET inhibition. Using automated immunohistoc

Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are NAB2-STAT6 fusion-associated neoplasms. There are several subtypes of NAB2-STAT6 fusions, but their clinical significances are still unclear. Moreover, the mechanisms of malignant progression are also poorly understood. In this study, using 91 SFT cases, we examined whether fusion variants are associated with clinicopathological parameters and also investigated the molecular mechanism of malignant transformation using whole-exome sequencing. We detected variant

BACKGROUND AND AIM: There are insufficient data on renal safety during long-term adefovir dipivoxil (ADV) treatment. We aimed to elucidate the incidence and risk factors of renal impairment in chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients treated with ADV. METHODS: We retrospectively enrolled 687 CHB patients (51.4% with compensated cirrhosis) treated with ADV alone (18.2%) or in combination with lamivudine (81.8%) for more than 12 months. Renal function was measured using the estimated glomerular filtrati

SJR Q1Journal of Translational MedicineOA

BACKGROUND: Sarcomas are challenging to study because of their rarity and histomorphological complexity. PD1 and PD-L1 inhibitors showed a promising anti-tumor effect in solid tumors, where a relationship between PD-L1 expression and the objective response has been evidenced. METHODS: In this study, we examined PD-L1 expression in 16 bone and soft tissue sarcoma cell lines of 11 different subtypes by means of western blot, flow cytometry and immunocytochemistry, and in 230 FFPE patient-derived t

Co-expression of MDM2 and CDK4 in transformed human mesenchymal stem cells causes high-grade sarcoma with a dedifferentiated liposarcoma-like morphology

SJR Q1Laboratory InvestigationOA

Amplification and overexpression of MDM2 and CDK4 are well-known diagnostic criteria for well-differentiated liposarcoma (WDLPS)/dedifferentiated liposarcoma (DDLPS). Although it was reported that the depletion of MDM2 or CDK4 decreased proliferation in DDLPS cell lines, whether MDM2 and CDK4 induce WDLPS/DDLPS tumorigenesis remains unclear. We examined whether MDM2 and/or CDK4 cause WDLPS/DDLPS, using two types of transformed human bone marrow stem cells (BMSCs), 2H and 5H, with five oncogenic

The prevalence of HBV coinfection in CHC patients was 2.37% and most of the patients were inactive carriers. The treatment efficacy was similar to that of HCV mono-infection. Reactivation of HBV replication was observed in some patients after CHC treatment.

Engrailed 1 overexpression as a potential prognostic marker in quintuple-negative breast cancer

SJR Q1Cancer Biology & TherapyOA

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is an aggressive breast cancer subtype characterized by poor patient prognosis and for which no targeted therapies are currently available. TNBC can be further categorized as either basal-like (BLBC) or quintuple-negative breast cancer (QNBC). In the present study, we aimed to identify novel molecular therapeutic targets for TNBC by analyzing the mRNA expression of TNBC-related genes in publicly available microarray data sets. We found that Engrailed 1 (EN1)

Adipogenesis induces growth inhibition of dedifferentiated liposarcoma
Yu Jin Kim, Dan Yu, Mingi Kim, Yoon‐La Choi
SJR Q1Cancer ScienceOA

Well-differentiated liposarcoma (WDLPS) and dedifferentiated liposarcoma (DDLPS) are the most common types of liposarcoma. Although WDLPS and DDLPS patients receive intensive treatment including radical surgery and systemic therapy, their overall 5-year survival rates are 90% and 30%, respectively, indicating that DDLPS is clinically more aggressive. We examined whether adipogenic stimulation induces adipogenesis in human WDLPS/DDLPS cells by using dexamethasone, indomethacin, insulin, and 3-iso

LYN expression predicts the response to dasatinib in a subpopulation of lung adenocarcinoma patients

SJR Q2OncotargetOA

Therapies targeting SRC family kinases (SFKs) have shown efficacy in treating non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, recent clinical trials have found that the SFK inhibitor dasatinib is ineffective in some patient cohorts. Regardless, dasatinib treatment may benefit some NSCLC patient subgroups. Here, we investigated whether expression of LYN, a member of the SFK family, is associated with patient survival, the efficacy of dasatinib, and/or NSCLC cell viability. LYN expression was associa

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Adefovir add-on therapy is recommended for patients infected with lamivudine-resistant hepatitis B virus (HBV). We aimed to describe the long-term treatment outcome and predictors for good response of adefovir add-on therapy. METHODS: A total of 559 chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients who had been treated for at least 12 months with adefovir add-on therapy due to resistance to lamivudine were retrospectively included. Complete virologic response (CVR) was defined as serum HBV

Background/Aims: Cross-sectional studies have documented that 2-10% of patients who are chronically infected with hepatitis C virus (HCV) are also positive for hepatitis B virus (HBV) surface antigen (HBsAg). Data related to HCV-HBV coinfection are lacking in Korea. This study evaluated the clinical characteristics, the treatment efficacy of peginterferon alfa plus ribavirin, and the changes induced by such treatment in HBV status in chronic hepatitis C (CHC) patients coinfected with HBV. Comparing the cytotoxic effect of light-emitting and organic light-emitting diodes based light therapy on human adipose-derived stem cells
김유진, 김성원, 이주로, 엄숭호, 정윤기, 방석호

Light has attracted significant attention as a promising tool in the biomedical and cosmetic industries. However, little is known about the cytotoxic effects of conventional light sources based on their physicaleffects such as temperature and luminance. Here, the cytotoxic effects of representative light sources, alight-emitting diode (LED) and an organic light-emitting diode (OLED), were studied with humanadipose-derived stem cells (hADSCs). Regardless of the identical light energy conditions,
