About the Lab

Professor Yumi Park's research lab focuses on translational biomedical research, with a strong emphasis on infectious diseases, neurotrauma, and gastrointestinal oncology. The lab investigates novel therapeutic agents and molecular mechanisms underlying Mycobacterium tuberculosis pathogenesis, spinal cord injury repair, and gastric carcinogenesis, integrating high-throughput screening, animal models, and clinical data. A key direction involves identifying predictive biomarkers and risk factors for early detection of colorectal and gastric neoplasms, while also exploring drug metabolism using zebrafish models to bridge preclinical and human pharmacology. The lab combines systems biology, functional genomics, and in vivo validation to advance precision medicine approaches in chronic and infectious diseases.

These results suggest that agmatine treatment could support neuroregeneration by reducing the collagen scar area through decreasing the expression of TGFβ-2 and increasing the expression of BMP-7 after SCI. Especially, the improved surface righting reflex of agmatine-treated group proposes that agmatine treatment have the potency to facilitate functional recovery after SCI. However, the drug (agmatine) warrants further investigation in higher mammals.

Mechanisms of magnesium homeostasis in Mycobacterium tuberculosis are poorly understood. Here, we describe the characterization of a pyrimidinetrione amide scaffold that disrupts magnesium homeostasis in the pathogen by direct binding to the CorA Mg 2+ /Co 2+ transporter. Mutations in domains of CorA that are predicted to regulate the pore opening in response to Mg 2+ ions conferred resistance to this scaffold.
