About the Lab
Professor Yun Ah Kim's research lab specializes in translational biomedical research with a focus on liver disease, cancer biology, and regenerative medicine. The lab investigates the pathophysiology of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), particularly the paradoxical cardiovascular risks in lean versus obese patients, and explores novel mechanisms of drug resistance in gastric and thyroid cancers. A key area of innovation involves the development of bioengineered scaffolds using fibroblast-derived extracellular matrix and magnesium hydroxide nanoparticles for renal tissue regeneration. The lab also examines predictive models for liver disease progression, such as MELD-Na scoring, to improve clinical outcomes.

Selected Papers
15Subjects with lean NAFLD had a significantly higher ASCVD score and prevalence of high risk for ASCVD than those with obese NAFLD. Similarly, lean subjects with significant liver fibrosis had a higher probability of ASCVD than obese subjects in the subpopulation with NAFLD.
PURPOSE: Endoscopic procedures can cause anxiety, which can lead to more uncomfortable, difficult, and incomplete procedures, in addition to greater use of sedative medication. Here, we investigate whether exposing patients to virtual reality (VR) prior to endoscopic procedures can reduce their anxiety levels. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty patients at Gangnam Severance Hospital were enrolled and divided into the VR group and the control group. Patients in the VR group were exposed to VR prior to
BACKGROUND: Trastuzumab is the only approved target agent for the first-line treatment of human epidermal growth factor receptor-2 (HER-2) positive gastric cancer; however, trastuzumab resistance is a major problem in clinical practice. To comprehend the mechanism of trastuzumab resistance, we focused on the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway and its influence on the phenotypes and behavior of trastuzumab-resistant gastric cancer cells. METHODS: Trastuzumab-resistant NCI-N87R cells were established
Since the progression of cirrhosis is accelerated each time a complication recurs, the management and treatment of the complication is critical in enhancement of the quality of life and expectation of life in patients. The use of model for end-stage liver disease with incorporation of serum-sodium (MELD-Na) with physiological indicators can be used to assess severity and differentiate therapeutic interventions. This study is aimed to determine the mean survival period and cumulative survival rate
Thyroid cancer is the most well-known type of endocrine cancer that is easily treatable and can be completely cured in most cases. Nonetheless, anti-cancer drug-resistant metastasis or recurrence may occur and lead to the failure of cancer therapy, which eventually leads to the death of a patient with cancer. This study aimed to detect novel thyroid cancer target candidates based on validating and identifying one of many anti-cancer drug-resistant targets in patient-derived sorafenib-resistant p
Background: Trans-arterial radioembolization (TARE) has shown promising results in treating hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). We identified independent predictors of radiological complete response (CR) in patients with intrahepatic HCC who were treated with TARE. Methods: Patients with intrahepatic HCC treated with TARE between 2011 and 2017 were recruited. CR was defined according to the modified Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors. Cox regression analysis was used to determine independe
Introduction: The impact of device-assisted enteroscopy (DAE) on long-term rebleeding in patients with obscure gastrointestinal bleeding (OGIB) exhibiting detectable small-bowel lesions remains unclear. We investigated the long-term rebleeding rate and predictive factors for DAE in patients with OGIB. Method: Patients with OGIB with small bowel lesions detected through DAE were enrolled at three Korean tertiary hospitals. Predictive risk factors associated with rebleeding were analyzed using the
In cases of progression despite chemotherapy, collecting gastric cancer (GC) tissues might be helpful for molecular biology research or the development of new target drugs for treating cases that are refractory to chemotherapy. Chemotherapy, however, may reduce or alter the distribution of GC tissue on the surface, making the detection of GC tissue during upper endoscopy challenging. Probe-based confocal laser endomicroscopy (pCLE) is a new technology that enables histological diagnosis by magni
BACKGROUND AND AIM: An optimal sequential anti-hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) agent that can be used after failed lenvatinib treatment has not been established. Here, we compared the outcomes of sorafenib and nivolumab as second-line agents after failed lenvatinib treatment in patients with advanced HCC. METHODS: Patients with advanced HCC who had received sorafenib or nivolumab as second-line agents after failed lenvatinib treatment were recruited from two Korean tertiary institutions between N
Transarterial radioembolization (TARE) is one of the therapeutic options for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). This study aimed to investigate the predictors and prognostic values of achieving curative treatments after TARE. Overall, 143 patients with intrahepatic HCC treated with TARE between 2011 and 2017 were recruited from two Korean tertiary institutes. Twenty-seven patients received curative treatments after TARE. Younger age than 65 years and AFP of ≤200 ng/mL independently predicted the in
The purpose of this research was to understand the process of overcoming the anxiety of the national badminton players before games employing the Grounded Theory approach as well as based on the results from the study could help improve the competitiveness and psychological skills of future coaches and players of the Badminton. A total of 14 national badminton players which used the purposive sampling method, including 6 singles players and 8 doubles players from the Badminton Association based
