About the Lab

Professor Yun Young Choi's research lab specializes in nuclear medicine and biomedical imaging, with a focus on molecular imaging techniques such as PET and SPECT for early disease detection and oncological applications. The lab investigates tracer uptake mechanisms in tumors, particularly using F-18 FDG and Tc-99m sestamibi, and explores their correlation with prognostic factors and molecular subtypes in breast cancer. Additionally, the lab examines physiological and pathological effects of substances like caffeine during critical developmental periods, as well as psychological and behavioral health, including the role of attachment, impulsivity, and social support in smartphone addiction. The integration of clinical imaging with psychological and biological research highlights a multidisciplinary approach to improving diagnostic accuracy and therapeutic outcomes.

Hepatic masses detected by ultrasonography and computed tomography in a young woman showed increased radioactivity on F-18 fluorodeoxyglucose positron tomography. Those multiple hepatic lesions were investigated under suspicion of malignancy. Liver enzymes, viral markers, and tumor markers were in normal range. Ultrasonography-guided needle biopsy revealed to be focal fatty infiltration in the liver.

SJR Q3Journal of Medicinal Food

This study investigated the dose- and time-dependent effects of caffeine consumption throughout puberty in peripubertal rats. A total of 85 male SD rats were randomly divided into four groups: control and caffeine-fed groups with 20, 60, or 120 mg/kg/day through oral gavage for 10, 20, 30, or 40 days. Caffeine decreased body weight gain and food consumption in a dose- and time-dependent manner, accompanied by a reduction in muscle and body fat. In addition, it caused a shortening and lightening

SJR Q2Clinical Nuclear Medicine

Plain radiographs of a 68-year-old man with lower back pain showed degenerative changes in the lumbar spine. An MRI showed a herniated disc at L5-S1 and an unexpected lesion in the L1 body suggesting a possible malignancy. Lumbar SPECT showed slightly decreased uptake in L1. Therefore, a benign condition such as a hemangioma was entertained as a possibility. Tc-99m RBC SPECT showed increased uptake in L1, suggesting the possibility of a vertebral hemangioma. A CT scan of the lumbar spine showed

Mechanisms of technetium-99m sesta-methoxyisobutylisonitrile (sestamibi) and F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) uptake by tumor are different. The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between the tumor uptake of these 2 tracers in invasive ductal carcinoma and to examine thecorrelation of uptake of each tracer with prognostic factors and tumor molecular subtypes.A total of 96 patients with invasive ductal carcinoma who underwent preoperative breast-specific gamma imaging and FDG posi

The Korean Journal of Nuclear Medicine

Purpose: Vasospasm is a complication of aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH). We assessed the role of acetazolamide-enhanced brain perfusion SPECT (ACZ-SPECT) with Tc-99m ECD for predicting the prognosis of patients with aSAH. Materials and methods: Two SPECT studios (baseline with 740 MBq and ACZ-SPECT with 1480 MBq) with image subtraction were performed in 21 patients with aSAH. All patients had brain CT and angiogram. Vasoreactivity on ACZ-SPECT, perfusion defect on baseline SPECT, and v

Nuclear Medicine Imaging in Rheumatic Diseases
Yun Young Choi, Ji Young Kim
SJR Q2Journal of Rheumatic DiseasesOA

The rapid development of medical imaging technologies has greatly enhanced the utility of nuclear medicine imaging modalities over the last decade. Hybrid imaging technology merging computed tomography (CT) with single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) or positron emission tomography (PET) allows superimposing the physiologic data obtained by SPECT or PET on the detailed anatomy of CT, yielding a better understanding of the disease status and improving diagnostic performance. However,
