研究室紹介

Professor Baekhee Kim's research lab focuses on gastrointestinal oncology, with a primary emphasis on gastric cancer biology, molecular subtyping, and tumor microenvironment regulation. The lab investigates key signaling pathways—such as sonic hedgehog and PI3K/Akt—that drive tumor progression, metastasis, and therapy resistance. By integrating genomics, proteomics, and preclinical models, the lab aims to identify predictive biomarkers and therapeutic targets for personalized cancer treatment. The work also extends to metabolic liver diseases, particularly the interplay between non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and atherosclerosis in the context of dyslipidemia and systemic inflammation.

Gastric cancer is a heterogeneous cancer, making treatment responses difficult to predict. Here we show that we identify two distinct molecular subtypes, mesenchymal phenotype (MP) and epithelial phenotype (EP), by analyzing genomic and proteomic data. Molecularly, MP subtype tumors show high genomic integrity characterized by low mutation rates and microsatellite stability, whereas EP subtype tumors show low genomic integrity. Clinically, the MP subtype is associated with markedly poor survival

Activation of sonic hedgehog (Shh) signaling has been implicated in progression of a variety of tumors. In this study, we elucidated a role for Shh in the invasion of gastric tumors and determined the mechanism by which Shh is regulated. Immunohistochemical analysis of 178 primary human gastric tumor biopsies indicated that Shh expression was positively correlated with lymph node metastasis, high lymphatic vessel density, and poor prognosis. In mouse xenograft models of human gastric cancer, enf

Cholesterol-Induced Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease and Atherosclerosis Aggravated by Systemic Inflammation

SJR Q1PLoS ONEOA

Although triglyceride accumulation in the liver causes non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), hypercholesterolemia is also a main cause of NAFLD as well as atherosclerosis. However, NAFLD and atherosclerosis have not been investigated simultaneously in animal models fed a high-cholesterol diet. Moreover, it is unclear whether systemic inflammation can exacerbate both pathologies in the same model. Accordingly, this study investigated the effect of additional systemic inflammation on NAFLD an

Background Hepatobiliary phase (HBP) hypointense nodules without arterial phase hyperenhancement (APHE) at gadoxetic acid–enhanced MRI may indicate hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) or nonmalignant cirrhosis-associated nodules. Purpose To assess the distribution of pathologic diagnoses of HBP hypointense nodules without APHE at gadoxetic acid–enhanced MRI and to evaluate clinical and imaging features in differentiating their histologic grades. Materials and Methods This retrospective multicenter st

The first edition of the 'Standardized Pathology Report for Colorectal Cancer,' which was developed by the Gastrointestinal Pathology Study Group (GIP) of the Korean Society of Pathologists, was published 13 years ago. Meanwhile, there have been many changes in the pathologic diagnosis of colorectal cancer (CRC), pathologic findings included in the pathology report, and immunohistochemical and molecular pathology required for the diagnosis and treatment of colorectal cancer.
