研究室紹介

Professor Byung-ho Yoon's research lab specializes in the design and fabrication of advanced porous ceramics, with a focus on freeze-casting techniques to create highly ordered, hierarchical porous structures. The lab develops functional ceramic materials—such as silicon carbide and hydroxyapatite—engineered for biomedical applications, particularly in bone tissue engineering, as well as for structural and functional uses in high-temperature environments. A key innovation lies in the use of camphene-based freeze casting to achieve large, aligned pore channels and in situ growth of SiC nanowires via vapor–liquid–solid mechanisms. The lab also explores the biological implications of medical therapies, such as TSH suppression in thyroid cancer, linking material science with clinical outcomes.

Highly Aligned Porous Silicon Carbide Ceramics by Freezing Polycarbosilane/Camphene Solution
Byung‐Ho Yoon, Eunjung Lee, Hyoun‐Ee Kim, Young‐Hag Koh
SJR Q1Journal of the American Ceramic Society

We fabricated highly aligned porous silicon carbide (SiC) ceramics with well‐defined pore structures by freezing a polycarbosilane (PCS)/camphene solution. In this method, the solution prepared at 60°C was cast into a mold at temperatures ranging from 20° to −196°C, which resulted in a bicontinuous structure, in which each phase (camphene or PCS) was interconnected in a regular pattern. After the removal of the frozen camphene network, the samples showed highly porous structures, in which long s

Generation of Large Pore Channels for Bone Tissue Engineering Using Camphene‐Based Freeze Casting
Byung‐Ho Yoon, Young‐Hag Koh, Chee‐Sung Park, Hyoun‐Ee Kim
SJR Q1Journal of the American Ceramic Society

The present study reports an innovative way to produce large pore channels with a size >100 μm for applications in bone tissue engineering using the camphene‐based freeze casting method, and using an unusually high freezing temperature, which is close to the solidification temperature of the slurry, in order to allow the formation of excessively overgrown camphene dendrites due to the extremely low solidification velocity. To accomplish this, hydroxyapatite (HA)/slurries with various solid lo

In Situ Synthesis of Porous Silicon Carbide (SiC) Ceramics Decorated with SiC Nanowires
Byung‐Ho Yoon, Chee‐Sung Park, Hyoun‐Ee Kim, Young‐Hag Koh
SJR Q1Journal of the American Ceramic Society

We fabricated highly aligned porous silicon carbide (SiC) ceramics decorated with SiC nanowires by the unidirectional freeze casting of SiC/camphene slurries with various polycarbosilane (PCS) contents, ranging from 0 to 20 wt% in relation to the SiC powders, in which the PCS preceramic was used as a binder and source for the in situ growth of the SiC nanowires. In this method, aligned pore channels were formed as a replica of the unidirectionally grown camphene dendrites, while SiC nanowires we

Although the included studies were limited by small numbers, results suggested possible association between chronic TSH suppression therapy and the lower BMD of spine and total hip in postmenopausal women (but not in premenopausal women and men) with DTC. A large, well-designed study with long-term follow-up would provide further insight into the influence of TSH suppression therapy and loss of BMD.
