研究室紹介

Professor Byung Hun Min's research lab specializes in gastrointestinal oncology and molecular pathology, with a focus on early-onset and early-stage gastrointestinal cancers, including early gastric cancer, colorectal cancer, and esophageal squamous cell carcinoma. The lab investigates the molecular and epigenetic mechanisms underlying carcinogenesis, particularly the role of CpG island methylator phenotype (CIMP) and genetic alterations in tumor progression. It also emphasizes the development of non-invasive diagnostic techniques, such as endoscopic ultrasonography-guided fine needle biopsy (EUS-FNB), and the creation of predictive models for lymph node metastasis to improve clinical decision-making in endoscopic resection. The lab integrates genomics, transcriptomics, and clinical data to enhance precision diagnosis and surveillance strategies for gastrointestinal malignancies.

Surveillance strategy based on the incidence and patterns of recurrence after curative endoscopic submucosal dissection for early gastric cancer

SJR Q1Endoscopy

There was a constant incidence rate of metachronous recurrence during a 5-year surveillance period and there was extragastric recurrence at least 4 years after ESD of early gastric cancer even for absolute indications. Therefore, annual or biannual surveillance EGD and abdominal CT might be necessary for at least 5 years after curative ESD for early gastric cancers, with absolute as well as expanded indications.

BACKGROUND: Colorectal carcinoma (CRC) with CpG island methylator phenotype (CIMP) is recognized as a distinct subgroup of CRC, and CIMP status affects prognosis and response to chemotherapy. Identification of CIMP status in CRC is important for proper patient management. In Eastern countries, however, the clinicopathologic and molecular characteristics and prognosis of CRCs with CIMP are still unclear. METHODS: A total of 245 patients who underwent their first surgical resection for sporadic CR

Several recurrent mutations and epigenetic changes have been identified in advanced gastric cancer, but the genetic alterations associated with early gastric carcinogenesis and malignant transformation remain unclear. We investigated the genomic and transcriptomic landscape of adenomas with low-grade dysplasia (LGD) and high-grade dysplasia (HGD), and intestinal-type early gastric cancer (EGC). The results were validated in an independent cohort that included EGCs directly adjacent to adenoma (E

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Knowledge of lymph node metastasis (LNM) status is crucial to determine whether patients with superficial esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) can be cured with endoscopic resection alone, without the need for additional esophagectomy. The present study aimed to identify predictive factors and develop a prediction model for LNM in patients with superficial ESCC. METHODS: Clinicopathologic data from 501 patients with superficial ESCC treated with radical esophagectomy wer

Basal Cell Adenoma of the Parotid Gland

Archives of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery

Three cases of basal cell adenoma of the parotid gland are reported with a review of the literature. The clinical, gross, and microscopic features appear distinctive enough to justify separation of this tumor from mixed tumors (pleomorphic adenomas) of the salivary glands. The tumors have been reported more commonly in individuals over 60 years of age and show little tendency for recurrence. Electron microscopy reveals that the material between groupings of tumor cells is reduplication of basal

As treatment decisions for patients with gastric subepithelial tumors (SETs) largely depend on the histopathologic diagnosis, noninvasive and effective tissue acquisition methods are definitely required for proper management of gastric SETs. Recently, a new endoscopic ultrasonography-guided fine needle biopsy (EUS-FNB) device with ProCore reverse bevel technology was developed. We aimed to elucidate the feasibility and diagnostic yield of EUS-FNB with this new core biopsy needle device in patien

The endoscopic findings of esophageal parakeratosis have not been well defined and its clinical significance including malignant potential is unclear. Here, we report a case of esophageal parakeratosis presenting as a discrete flat elevated lesion and mimicking the endoscopic appearance of superficial esophageal neoplastic lesion such as dysplasia or cancer. A 72-year-old woman was referred to our hospital for an esophageal lesion detected by upper endoscopy during a medical check-up. Upper endo

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Limited data exist regarding the natural history of duodenal carcinoid tumors and the efficacy of endoscopic treatment. METHODS: A total of 27 patients with duodenal carcinoid tumors were enrolled. All tumors were located outside the periampullary region and were ≤10 mm in size. 11 patients underwent endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) and argon plasma coagulation (APC). 13 patients did not undergo any specific procedure for tumor removal and were followed clinically. RESULTS: Of
