Professor Byung-Il Kim's research lab specializes in hepatology and metabolic liver diseases, with a strong focus on drug-induced liver injury (DILI), non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and variceal bleeding in patients with liver cirrhosis. The lab investigates the pathophysiological links between insulin resistance, systemic inflammation, and liver disease, particularly in non-obese populations, and evaluates interventional strategies such as endoscopic and pharmacological treatments for gastric variceal hemorrhage. The research emphasizes clinical epidemiology, causality assessment tools, and the role of metabolic syndrome in liver and colorectal pathology.

15DILI appears to be a highly relevant health problem in Korea. "Herbal medications" are the principal cause of DILI. A more objective and reproducible causality assessment tool is strongly desired as the RUCAM scale frequently undercounts the cases caused by herbs owing to a lack of previous information and incompatible time criteria.
UNLABELLED: Vasoactive drugs are recommended to be started as soon as possible in suspected variceal bleeding, even before diagnostic endoscopy. However, it is still unclear whether the therapeutic efficacies of the various vasoactive drugs used are comparable. The aim of this prospective, multicenter, randomized, noninferiority trial was to characterize the effects of terlipressin, somatostatin, and octreotide when they are initiated before endoscopic treatment in patients with acute variceal b
BACKGROUND AND AIM: Although insulin resistance is often considered the link between obesity and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), the role of insulin resistance, independent of obesity, as a NAFLD risk factor in non-obese men has been less well established. Systemic inflammation may be accompanied by insulin resistance in healthy subjects. The goal of the present study was to examine if insulin resistance and systemic inflammatory markers are independent predictors of NAFLD in non-obes
BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance are associated with a higher risk of colon cancer. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is regarded as a manifestation of metabolic syndrome in the liver. This investigation was initiated to determine whether NAFLD has a relationship to colorectal adenomatous polyps. METHODS: We examined the 2917 participants who underwent a routine colonoscopy at Kangbuk Samsung Hospital in 2007. We divided the 2917 subjects into the adenomatou
BACKGROUND AND AIM: Our study aimed to evaluate the therapeutic results of endoscopic N-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate injection (EBC) and balloon-occluded retrograde transvenous obliteration (BRTO) in patients with gastric variceal hemorrhage (GVH) and/or high-risk gastric varices (GV). METHODS: Twenty-seven patients with GVH and/or high-risk GV (>or= 5 mm in diameter, those with red spots, and a Child-Pugh grading of B or C liver cirrhosis) who were treated with either EBC or BRTO from April 2005 to De
NAFLD had an association with HbA1c level and insulin resistance in nondiabetic individuals, and these associations were independent of obesity and other metabolic components.
This phase II, investigator-initiated, prospective single-arm multinational study (ClinicalTrials.gov registration NCT00990860) evaluated sorafenib in combination with doxorubicin-based transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) in patients with intermediate-stage, unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Patients with histologically or clinically diagnosed HCC received TACE with interrupted dosing of sorafenib (sorafenib discontinued for 3 days before and 4-7 days after TACE). TACE/sorafenib cy
BACKGROUND/AIMS: Antibiotic resistance and poor compliance are the main causes of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) eradication failure. Proton pump inhibitor (PPI)-based triple therapy is the most preferred regimen in clinical practice. However, a critical fall in the H. pylori eradication rate has been observed in the recent years. A novel 10 day-sequential therapy consists of five days of dual therapy followed by five days of triple therapy regimen has recently been described. We aimed to evalu
AIM: To compare the risk of developing advanced colorectal neoplasm (ACRN) according to age in Koreans. METHODS: A total of 70428 Koreans from an occupational cohort who underwent a colonoscopy between 2003 and 2012 at Kangbuk Samsung Hospital were retrospectively selected. We evaluated and compared odds ratios (OR) for ACRN between the young-adults (YA < 50 years) and in the older-adults (OA ≥ 50 years). ACRN was defined as an adenoma ≥ 10 mm in diameter, adenoma with any component of villous h
BACKGROUND/AIMS: Recent studies have found that probiotics have anti-Helicobacter pylori (HP) properties. We evaluated the additive effects of (i) Saccharomyces boulardii combined with proton pump inhibitor (PPI)-based triple therapy and (ii) S. boulardii and a mucoprotective agent (DA-9601) coupled with PPI-based triple therapy for HP eradication. METHODS: We recruited 991 HP infected patients and randomized them into one of three groups, (A) PPI-based 7-day triple therapy, (B) the same triple
