Professor Chan-hyung Kim's research lab focuses on translational biomedical research, particularly in cardiovascular disease mechanisms and neuropsychiatric disorders. The lab investigates molecular pathways underlying cardiac protection, such as the role of HIF-1 and Akt signaling in ischemic preconditioning and mechanical stress-induced angiogenesis. It also explores the neurobiological and psychological underpinnings of psychiatric conditions, including obsessive-compulsive disorder and bipolar disorder, with a focus on symptom subtypes, comorbidities like alexithymia, and treatment algorithms. Additionally, the lab examines non-pharmacological interventions, such as aerobic exercise, in improving mental and physical health outcomes in schizophrenia and other chronic mental illnesses.

Early Expression of Myocardial HIF-1α in Response to Mechanical Stresses

SJR Q1Circulation ResearchOA

Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) expression is upregulated by hypoxia-inducible factor-1 (HIF-1) in ischemic tissues and growing tumors. Normally, HIF-1 activity depends on the amount of HIF-1alpha subunit, which is tightly regulated by the oxygen tension. In the myocardium, VEGF expression has been shown to be induced under nonhypoxic conditions by mechanical stresses. However, the cellular mechanism of stress-mediated VEGF induction remains unclear. Therefore, we examined the possible

Alexithymia in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder
Daeyoung Roh, Woo Jung Kim, Chan‐Hyung Kim
SJR Q3The Journal of Nervous and Mental DiseaseOA

Previous studies have indicated that obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is associated with alexithymic traits. The purpose of the current study was to evaluate the difference of alexithymia in OCD patients and healthy controls. This study was also designed to elucidate a specific link between certain OCD symptom dimensions and alexithymia. Forty-five patients with OCD and 45 healthy controls completed measures of the OCD symptom severity, alexithymia, anxiety, and depression. Patients with OCD

SJR Q1Depression and AnxietyOA

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a clinically heterogeneous disorder; nonetheless, most of the previous neuropsychological studies for assessing the involvement of memory dysfunction grouped together patients with different symptoms, thereby potentially accounting for the inconsistencies of results. The goals of this study were to compare the memory dysfunction of two main subtypes of OCD and to identify the type of memory dysfunction that is associated with the checking symptoms in OCD pa

The objective of this study was to examine the feasibility and sustained effect of a group aerobic exercise program in patients with schizophrenia. Twenty-four schizophrenic patients participated in a group-based individually tailored 90-minute outdoor cycling session per week for 3 months with intervention to enhance motivation. Physical health was evaluated by anthropometric measures, cardiorespiratory (CR) fitness, and blood tests. Mental health was assessed on self-esteem, interpersonal rela

Activation of Akt/protein kinase B mediates the protective effects of mechanical stretching against myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury
Chan‐Hyung Kim, Hao Jia, Hee‐Yul Ahn, Si Wook Kim
SJR Q2Journal of Veterinary ScienceOA

Akt/protein kinase B is a well-known cell survival factor and activated by many stimuli including mechanical stretching. Therefore, we evaluated the cardioprotective effect of a brief mechanical stretching of rat hearts and determined whether activation of Akt through phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase(PI3K) is involved in stretch-induced cardioprotection (SIC). Stretch preconditioning reduced infarct size and improved postischemic cardiac function compared to the control group. Phosphorylation of Ak
