Professor Chang-beom Lee's research lab focuses on obesity, metabolic syndrome, and their related comorbidities such as type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. The lab is deeply involved in developing evidence-based clinical practice guidelines for obesity management, emphasizing multidisciplinary approaches and population-level health interventions. Research also extends to surgical outcomes, particularly in endocrine surgery, such as the preservation of parathyroid function during thyroidectomy. The lab integrates clinical research with public health data to improve preventive strategies and patient outcomes in Korean and broader East Asian populations.

15Obesity increases the risks of diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular diseases, ultimately contributing to mortality. Korean Society for the Study of Obesity (KSSO) was established to improve the management of obesity through research and education; to that end, the Committee of Clinical Practice Guidelines of KSSO reviews systemic evidence using expert panels to develop clinical guidelines. The clinical practice guidelines for obesity were revised in 2018 using National Health Insurance Ser
The dramatic increase in the prevalence of obesity and its accompanying comorbidities are major health concerns in Korea. Obesity is defined as a body mass index ≥25 kg/m² in Korea. Current estimates are that 32.8% of adults are obese: 36.1% of men and 29.7% of women. The prevalence of being overweight and obese in national surveys is increasing steadily. Early detection and the proper management of obesity are urgently needed. Weight loss of 5% to 10% is the standard goal. In obese patients, co

The goal of the 8th edition of the Clinical Practice Guidelines for Obesity is to help primary care physician provide safe, effective care to patients with obesity by offering evidence-based recommendations to improve the quality of treatment. The Committee for Clinical Practice Guidelines comprised individuals with multidisciplinary expertise in obesity management. A steering board of seven experts oversaw the entire project. Recommendations were developed as the answers to key questions formul
OBJECTIVES: To prevent hypoparathyroidism after thyroidectomy, preservation of the parathyroid glands and their vascularity are essential. The aim of this study was to determine the association between postoperative parathyroid function and the viability of the parathyroid glands during thyroidectomy. METHODS: We prospectively analyzed 111 patients who underwent total thyroidectomy and in whom all 4 parathyroid glands were preserved in situ during the operation. The surgeons scored the viability
CONTEXT: Some studies have suggested that patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) concomitant with obesity have better clinical outcomes than normal-weight patients with T2DM. OBJECTIVE: We evaluated associations among obesity, cardiovascular disease (CVD) events, and mortality in elderly patients with T2DM without CVD. METHODS: This retrospective observational study from 2009 to 2017, with a mean follow-up of 7.26 years, included 249 903 elderly (≥ 65 years) patients with T2DM and no pree
Coffee has been proposed to have benefits for chronic diseases; however, the relevant mechanism remains to be elucidated. We conducted a cross-sectional study and evaluated the levels of adiponectin and leptin in relation to coffee consumption. We included a total of 4406 individuals (men = 2587 and women = 1819) for adiponectin analysis and 2922 individuals (men = 1731 and women = 1191) for leptin analysis. Participants answered number of cups of coffee per week and types of coffee they consume
AIMS: This study evaluated the efficacy and safety of a combination of phentermine and delayed-release topiramate (PHEN/TPM CR) versus placebo as an adjunct to standard lifestyle recommendations in Korean adults. MATERIALS AND METHODS: ) at eight sites in South Korea. After a 12-week lifestyle programme, participants were randomly assigned in a 1:1 ratio to receive PHEN/TPM CR or placebo. PHEN/TPM CR was commenced at 3.75 mg/23 mg daily for 14 days and increased to 7.5 mg/46 mg daily, and to 15
There have been many advances in obesity treatment, including life-style modification and pharmacological and surgical treatments. It seems that the most remarkable advances in obesity treatment are those of pharmacological strategies. However, weight loss medications have a long history of development. The FDA has withdrawn anti-obesity drugs such as fenfluramine, dexfenfluramine, and phenylpropylamine due to unwanted side effects.Sibutramine was voluntarily withdrawn from the market, and new drug
