研究室紹介

Professor Cheol Woong Choi's research lab specializes in cardiovascular physiology and clinical cardiology, with a strong focus on arterial stiffness, hemodynamic changes in aging, and the pathophysiology of coronary artery disease. The lab investigates key hemodynamic parameters such as pulse-wave velocity and central blood pressure, particularly in relation to aging and cardiovascular risk. It also explores the impact of medical therapies—like statins—on lipid subfractions and vascular function, as well as novel biomarkers such as mean platelet volume in coronary vasospasm. Additionally, the lab examines functional capacity and exercise tolerance using measures like handgrip strength and 6-minute walk tests in patients with coronary heart disease.

Differing effects of aging on central and peripheral blood pressures and pulse wave velocity: a direct intraarterial study

SJR Q1Journal of Hypertension

The present invasive study suggests that aging has a greater effect on central rather than peripheral arterial hemodynamics. The central pulse pressure was the predominant BP affected by aging, which could be caused by the stronger relationship of aging with central arterial stiffness.

BACKGROUND: Aortic stiffness is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular (CV) events and mortality. However, there are few studies about the predictive role of aortic stiffness. We investigated the association between aortic pulse-wave velocity (aPWV), using direct intra-arterial measurement and future CV events, in patients with chest pain. METHODS: Aortic pulse-wave velocity was measured through an aorto-femoral, fluid-filled system at baseline in 1004 patients with chest pain. Among thes

In an observational study, we examined the effect of statins on low-density-lipoprotein (LDL) subfractions.Using density-gradient ultracentrifugation, we measured small, dense LDL density in 612 patients (mean age, 61.7 ± 12.6 yr), some with and some without coronary artery disease, who were placed in a statin-treated group (n=172) or a control group (n=440) and subdivided on the basis of coronary artery disease status.Total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, apolipoprotein B, and the LDL cholesterol

PURPOSE: A recent study has shown that quadriceps strength can be used to predict the level of exercise capacity in patients with coronary heart disease. We investigated whether the relationship between muscular strength and exercise capacity is also observed with handgrip strength (HGS). METHODS: We studied 443 participants (61.8 ± 11.2 yr; 78% male) who underwent coronary intervention and participated in cardiac rehabilitation between 2015 and 2018. Logistic regression was used to assess the r

Can mean platelet volume predict coronary vasospasm?
Cheol Ung Choi, Hong Seog Seo, Yun Kyung Kim, Jin Oh Na, Hong Euy Lim, Jin Won Kim, Eung Ju Kim, Seung‐Woon Rha, Chang Gyu Park, Dong Joo Oh
SJR Q2Platelets

Mean platelet volume (MPV) is an index of platelet function that reflects platelet production rate and sensitivity to activation. The relationship between MPV and coronary vasospasm has not been previously studied. In this study, we aimed to evaluate this relationship. A total of 696 patients (age 55.20 ± 12.26, male 46.4%, female 53.6%) with typical or atypical angina who underwent diagnostic coronary angiography (CAG) and an acetylcholine (Ach)-provocation test were enrolled. Each patient was

Estimating the probability of stroke in Korean hypertensive patients visiting tertiary hospitals using a risk profile from the framingham study

BACKGROUND: Hypertension is the most important single modifiable risk factor for stroke. We investigated the distribution of stroke risk factors and 10-year probability of stroke in Korean hypertensive patients. METHODS: A total of 1,402 hypertensive patients treated by cardiology departments at 37 general hospitals nationwide were enrolled. Risk factors for stroke were evaluated using a series of laboratory tests and physical examinations, and the 10-year probability of stroke was determined by

혈압측정 트렌드의 변화: 중심 동맥압과 대동맥 경직도, 맥파 분석
최철웅, 박창규
대한내과학회지

중심 대동맥압은 말초동맥압에 비해, 직접적으로 심장의 후부하를 나타내는 표지자임으로, 좌심실 심근, 관상동맥과 뇌혈관의 부하에 대해 보다 더 정확하게 반영을 하고, 표적 장기손상 및 심혈관 질환의 발생과 더 밀접하게 관련이 있는 것으로 알려져 있다. 대규모의 연구에서도 파형증가 지수 등 맥파 분석과 중심 대동맥압이 심혈관 질환의 발생과 연관이 있다고 보고하였고, 이런 요소들을 비침습적으로 측정하는 방법들이 소개되었다. 따라서 중심 대동맥압과 맥파 속도 및 파형증가 지수 측정이 실제 환자를 치료하는데 있어서 중요할 것으로 생각되고 있다. 혈관경직도를 개선시키는 방안은 혈관경직도에 관여하는 요인이 다양하므로 비약물 요법과 함께 다양한 약제를 복합하는 치료로 발전할 것으로 생각된다. 아직 해결해야 될 제한점들(각 지표들의 측정부위 및 방법의 표준화, 다양한 환자군에서 사용가능하고 적용할 수 있는 참고치 확정 등)이 남아있기는 하지만 향후 중심 대동맥압과 이와 연관된 지수들(대동맥 경직도;
