Professor Chikyung Kim's research lab focuses on nanomedicine and cerebrovascular disease, with a central emphasis on developing and applying nanomaterials—particularly ceria nanoparticles—for the protection against ischemic stroke. The lab investigates the role of oxidative stress, inflammation, and metabolic biomarkers such as leptin and gamma-glutamyl transferase in stroke pathophysiology, aiming to identify novel therapeutic targets and predictive markers for subclinical cerebrovascular disease. Their work bridges nanotechnology, neuroscience, and clinical cardiology, especially in aging and metabolic syndrome-related stroke risk.

15Uniform 3 nm-sized ceria nanoparticles can protect against ischemic stroke by scavenging reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reducing apoptosis. PEGylated ceria nanoparticles showed protective effects against ROS-induced cell death in vitro. Optimal doses of ceria nanoparticles reduced infarct volumes and the rate of ischemic cell death in vivo.

The authors report for the first time that increased brachial PP is an age-independently associated with WMLs in asymptomatic elderly individuals. This result suggests that PP as a presumed marker of vascular aging may predict the presence of sub-clinical cerebrovascular diseases.
