研究室紹介
Professor Dae Hun Suh's research lab focuses on the pathophysiology of acne and related dermatological conditions, with a strong emphasis on understanding the roles of inflammation, microbial colonization (particularly *Propionibacterium acnes*), and growth factor signaling in acne development and scarring. The lab investigates novel therapeutic approaches, including oral isotretinoin, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) combined with fractional laser therapy, and the impact of systemic factors such as diet, oxidative stress, and psychiatric comorbidities. Additionally, the lab is actively involved in psychometric validation of empathy scales in medical professionals, reflecting a multidisciplinary approach integrating dermatology, immunology, and behavioral medicine.

15There are four central factors that contribute to acne physiopathology: the inflammatory response, colonization with Propionibacterium acnes, increased sebum production and hypercornification of the pilosebaceous duct. In addition, research in the areas of diet and nutrition, genetics and oxidative stress is also yielding some interesting insights into the development of acne. In this paper we review some of the most recent research and novel concepts revealed in this work, which has been publis
BACKGROUND: Empathy is an important element of professionalism in medicine. Thus, evaluation and enhancement empathy in physicians is important, regardless of geographical boundaries. AIM: This study was designed to evaluate the psychometrics of a Korean version of the Jefferson Scale of Physician Empathy (JSPE) among Korean physicians. METHODS: The Korean version of JSPE was completed by 229 physicians in Korea. RESULTS: Item-total score correlations were all positive and statistically signific
These results may provide a basis for understanding the pathogenesis of atrophic acne scarring. Reduction of excessive inflammation and TGF-β1 signalling in early acne lesions is expected to facilitate the protection of normal extracellular matrix metabolism and ultimately the prevention of atrophic scar formation. What's already known about this topic? The dermis of atrophic acne scars shows alteration of extracellular matrix components such as collagen fibres. Inflammation in acne lesions is a
Oral isotretinoin is a highly effective agent for the treatment of moderate to severe acne, but ever since oral isotretinoin was introduced as a modality for acne, the relationship between oral isotretinoin therapy and psychiatric problems, especially depression, has been controversial. The purposes of this study were to know the acute effects of oral isotretinoin therapy on psychiatric symptoms and to investigate the relationships among them, which have not been reported in the published work.
BACKGROUND: Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) which contains large amounts of growth factors has been tried to enhance therapeutic efficacy of laser treatment for acne scar with unknown underlying mechanism. OBJECTIVES: The present study was conducted to investigate the molecular mechanism of increased clinical efficacy of PRP when combined with fractional laser treatment for treating acne scars. METHODS: laser therapy given with and without co-administration of PRP. Skin biopsy specimens were obtained
BACKGROUND: Acne is a common skin disorder that affects both adolescents and adults. However, few epidemiological studies on this condition have been conducted in Asia. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to analyze the incidence of acne and to identify its demographic and clinical features and aggravating factors. In addition, we examined the relationships between these factors. METHODS: Epidemiological and clinical data were obtained, using a self-administered questionnaire, from patient
Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic, relapsing, inflammatory skin disorder. Although several epidemiological studies have been conducted in Western countries, such data regarding Asian populations are scarce. In this study, we sought to investigate the demographic and clinical features of HS in Korea. A total of 438 patients, diagnosed with HS from May 2007 to April 2017, were enrolled and the electronic medical record of each patient was reviewed. Male patients were predominant with a ma
BACKGROUND: Fractional microneedling radiofrequency (FMR) is an emerging treatment modality, but its effect on rosacea has not been studied yet. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the potential impact of FMR treatment on clinical improvement and histologic changes in rosacea patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A 12-week, prospective, randomized, split-face clinical trial was conducted. Two sessions of FMR were performed on one side of the cheeks with 4-week interval and the other side remained untreated. Er
Various methods of photodynamic therapy (PDT) for acne have been introduced. However, comparative studies among them are still needed. We performed this study to compare the effect of methyl aminolevulinate (MAL) PDT for acne between red light and intense pulsed light (IPL). Twenty patients were enrolled in this eight-week, prospective, split-face study. We applied MAL cream over the whole face with a three-hour incubation time. Then patients were irradiated with 22 J/cm(2) of red light on one-h
The aims of this study were to investigate the effect of UVA and UVB on comedones and sebum secretion in acne patients. Thirteen acne patients were irradiated by UVA (starting from 20J/cm2 and increasing 10% every day) and UVB (starting from 2/3 MED and increasing 10% every day). IL-1alpha, IL-6, IL-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1ra), IL-10 and GM-CSF were measured by ELISA. Measurement of sebum level was also performed. Sebum level was increased in the first three days by UVA (18.4 --> 37.6 microg/
