Professor Deog Kyeom Kim's research lab specializes in respiratory and pulmonary diseases, with a strong focus on the genetic and environmental determinants of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, and chronic cough. The lab integrates genomics, imaging (particularly volumetric CT), and clinical epidemiology to identify biomarkers, genetic susceptibility, and structural lung changes associated with smoking-related lung diseases. Their work also extends to skeletal biomechanics, examining vertebral osteophytosis in historical populations to understand age-related and sex-related degenerative changes.

15RATIONALE: A genome-wide association study (GWAS) for circulating chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) biomarkers could identify genetic determinants of biomarker levels and COPD susceptibility. OBJECTIVES: To identify genetic variants of circulating protein biomarkers and novel genetic determinants of COPD. METHODS: GWAS was performed for two pneumoproteins, Clara cell secretory protein (CC16) and surfactant protein D (SP-D), and five systemic inflammatory markers (C-reactive protein, f
BACKGROUND: Cigarette smoking is the principal environmental risk factor for developing COPD, and nicotine dependence strongly influences smoking behavior. This study was performed to elucidate the relationship between nicotine dependence, genetic susceptibility to nicotine dependence, and volumetric CT findings in smokers. METHODS: Current smokers with COPD (GOLD stage ≥ 2) or normal spirometry were analyzed from the COPDGene Study, a prospective observational study. Nicotine dependence was det
Asthma is a prevalent and serious health problem in Korea. Recently, the Korean Asthma Guideline has been updated by The Korean Academy of Tuberculosis and Respiratory Diseases (KATRD) in an effort to improve the clinical management of asthma. This guideline focuses on adult patients with asthma and aims to deliver up to date scientific evidence and recommendations to general physicians for the management of asthma. For this purpose, this guideline was updated following systematic review and met
Although chronic cough is very common, its prevalence and causes have been rarely reported in the large general population including smokers. This study aimed to identify the prevalence of possible causes of chronic cough and their clinical impact. From Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) data including 119,280 adults aged over 40 years, 302 individuals with chronic cough were recruited irrespective of smoking status. Data from questionnaire, laboratory tests includi
Spinal osteophytic changes are known to be affected by differences in age, sex, population, and mechanical stress. We examined Joseon skeletons (n=87) to obtain vertebral osteophytosis data on a pre-modern Korean population. The mean osteophytic value (MOV) of vertebrae increased in the cervical-thoracic-lumbar order. More severe osteophytosis was found in the vertebrae (C5, T9, T10, and L4) farthest from the line of gravity, while the general pattern of vertebral osteophytosis appeared similar
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Development of CPE in CAP is associated with prolonged hospital stay and it may increase the morbidity and mortality. We aimed to identify microbiological and clinical factors that predicate a prolonged hospital admission in patients treated with a tube thoracostomy to control CPE. METHODS: This retrospective cohort included patients with CPE requiring chest tube drainage in a tertiary referral Korean hospital from 1 January 2004 to 30 July 2012. After dichotomous group
OBJECTIVE: Although extrapulmonary organs are involved in 20% of patients with tuberculosis, the host genetic factors associated with the extrapulmonary dissemination of tuberculosis are not yet known. The aim of this study was to identify the host genetic factors associated with the extrapulmonary dissemination of tuberculosis by comparing gene expression profiles of patients who had recovered from extrapulmonary tuberculosis and those who had recovered from pulmonary tuberculosis. METHODS: Fiv
The prevalence and clinical implications of discordance between Xpert MTB/RIF assays and the AdvanSure TB/NTM real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for bronchial washing specimens have not been studied in pulmonary TB (PTB) patients. The discordant proportion and its clinical impact were evaluated in 320 patients from the bronchoscopy registry whose bronchial washing specimens were tested simultaneously with Xpert MTB/RIF and the TB/NTM PCR assay for three years, and the accuracy of the assa

Abstract Background & Aims The association between nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and pulmonary function remains elusive because of the heterogeneous spectrum and inaccurate diagnostic methods of NAFLD, and insufficient pulmonary function data. We conducted this study to identify the association between histological severity of NAFLD and pulmonary function. Methods This study included patients ≥18 years old with baseline pulmonary function data between August 2014 and July 2019 wit
Certain SNPs located on chromosome 6 or the <i>HLA-DQB2</i> gene were the top-scoring SNPs for the association with susceptibility to early COPD in the Korean GENIE cohort.
