Professor Eun Sun Jang's research lab focuses on hepatology and gastroenterology, with a strong emphasis on liver disease biomarkers, hepatic fibrosis assessment, and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in chronic liver conditions. The lab investigates the diagnostic and prognostic value of biomarkers such as AFP and DKK-1 in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), evaluates non-invasive tools like ElastPQ for fibrosis staging, and explores lifestyle factors—particularly coffee consumption—on liver function and disease progression. The research also examines the impact of comorbidities, treatment outcomes, and socioeconomic factors on patient-reported outcomes in chronic hepatitis B and C patients.

15AFP was the most useful single biomarker for HCC diagnosis, and the combined measurement of AFP and DKK-1 could maximize the diagnostic yield. Clinical decision should be based on the consideration of various factors affecting the diagnostic performance of each biomarker. Efforts to seek novel HCC biomarkers should be continued.
BACKGROUND: Liver function tests (LFTs) can be affected by many factors and the proposed effects of coffee on LFT require a comprehensive evaluation. HRQoL in Korean patients with chronic HCV infection was low and was affected by cirrhosis severity, SVR, and comorbidity as well as income, which had the strongest effect. Therefore, HRQoL may be improved by antiviral therapy with reasonable costs to prevent cirrhosis progression.
