研究室紹介

Professor Eungju Kim's research lab focuses on cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, with a particular emphasis on atherosclerosis, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and the interplay between systemic inflammation, metabolic dysfunction, and vascular pathology. The lab employs advanced molecular imaging techniques—such as PET/CT with (18)F-FDG and novel radiotracers like ⁶⁸Ga-NOTA-MSA—to investigate inflammatory activity in atherosclerotic plaques, liver, and hematopoietic organs. Research also explores the impact of aging, obesity, and dyslipidemia on arterial stiffness and cardiac function, integrating clinical and preclinical models to understand disease mechanisms and improve diagnostic and therapeutic strategies.

BACKGROUND: Atherosclerosis is considered to be an inflammatory disease associated with the activation of hematopoietic and immune-related organs such as the bone marrow (BM) and spleen. We evaluated the metabolic activity of those organs and of the carotid artery with (18)F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography in patients with coronary artery disease, including acute myocardial infarction. METHODS AND RESULTS: Whole-body combined (18)F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/

Cholesterol-Induced Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease and Atherosclerosis Aggravated by Systemic Inflammation

SJR Q1PLoS ONEOA

Although triglyceride accumulation in the liver causes non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), hypercholesterolemia is also a main cause of NAFLD as well as atherosclerosis. However, NAFLD and atherosclerosis have not been investigated simultaneously in animal models fed a high-cholesterol diet. Moreover, it is unclear whether systemic inflammation can exacerbate both pathologies in the same model. Accordingly, this study investigated the effect of additional systemic inflammation on NAFLD an

Healthy obesity was associated with subtle changes in left ventricular structure and function. These data provide evidence that metabolically healthy phenotypes with excess weight may not be a benign condition.

These findings suggest that MR-specific 68Ga-NOTA-MSA is effective for detecting atherosclerosis in the aorta and is a promising radiopharmaceutical for imaging atherosclerosis because of the presence of M2 macrophages in atherosclerotic plaques.

The present invasive study suggests that aging has a greater effect on central rather than peripheral arterial hemodynamics. The central pulse pressure was the predominant BP affected by aging, which could be caused by the stronger relationship of aging with central arterial stiffness.

The regression equation of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) was a preferred method for estimating maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max). Recently, a more precise equation from the fitness registry and the importance of exercise national database (FRIEND) for healthy people was developed. This study compared VO2max estimated by the ACSM and FRIEND equations to VO2max directly measured in coronary artery disease (CAD) patients. Overall, 293 CAD patients who participated in cardiac reha

We investigated reference values for cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) for healthy Koreans and Koreans with coronary heart disease (CHD) and used them to identify inter-ethnic differences in CRF, differences over time in CRF, and differences in CRF between the healthy population and patients with CHD. The study population for healthy Koreans was derived from the database of KISS FitS (Korea Institute of Sports Science Fitness Standards) between 2014 and 2015. The study population for Koreans with
