研究室紹介
Professor Eunran Kim's research lab focuses on gastrointestinal diseases, particularly colorectal cancer (CRC) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), with an emphasis on early detection, pathogenesis, and novel therapeutic strategies. The lab investigates non-invasive diagnostic tools such as urine-based NMR metabolomics for CRC screening and explores the gut-liver axis in metabolic liver diseases like NAFLD and NASH. A key research direction involves evaluating endoscopic therapies, including endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) and the role of rescue surgery in early gastric cancer, aiming to improve outcomes and reduce complications. The lab also examines the impact of chronic inflammation and immune responses in carcinogenesis, integrating molecular diagnostics with clinical outcomes.

15Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are at increased risk for developing colorectal cancer (CRC), although the overall incidence of IBD-associated CRC has been diminishing in recent decades in western countries. As demonstrated in previous studies, the risk of CRC in IBD increases with longer duration, extent of colitis, a familial history of CRC, coexistent primary sclerosing cholangitis, and the degree of inflammation. The pathogenesis of CRC in IBD is poorly understood. Similar to
Measurement of colon transit time is the most basic and primary tool in evaluating disorders of colonic motility. In particular, it is helpful in pathologic diagnosis and for planning management in patients with constipation. Several techniques for measuring colon transit time currently exist. The standard measurement of colon transit time has been performed using radioopaque marker test. The radioopaque marker test is the most widely used method; it is simple to perform as well as being cost ef
Although colorectal cancer (CRC) is considered one of the most preventable cancers, no non-invasive, accurate diagnostic tool to screen CRC exists. We explored the potential of urine nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) metabolomics as a diagnostic tool for early detection of CRC, focusing on advanced adenoma and stage 0 CRC. Urine metabolomics profiles from patients with colorectal neoplasia (CRN; 36 advanced adenomas and 56 CRCs at various stages, n = 92) and healthy controls (normal, n = 156) wer
BACKGROUND: Whether rescue surgery confers a survival benefit in patients undergoing non-curative endoscopic resection of early gastric cancer remains controversial. METHODS: This was a retrospective review of patients who underwent non-curative endoscopic resection of at least one lesion of differentiated-type early gastric cancer between 2000 and 2011. Patients with a positive lateral resection margin as the only non-curative factor were excluded. Outcome was investigated by univariable (Kapla
BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Currently there is no Food and Drug Administration-approved drug to treat NAFLD and NASH, the rates of which are increasing worldwide. Although NAFLD/NASH are highly complex and heterogeneous conditions, most pharmacotherapy pipelines focus on a single mechanistic target. Considering the importance of the gut-liver axis in their pathogenesis, we investigated the therapeutic effect of a long-acting dual agonist of glucagon-like peptide (GLP)-1 and GLP-2 receptors in mice with
Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) is a useful procedure for the treatment of superficial gastrointestinal neoplasm. Compared with endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR), ESD has several benefits, which include resectability of various difficult lesion, accurate histologic assessment of specimen, and lower recurrence rate. However, the risk of procedure- related complications is higher with ESD than with EMR. Moreover, because the colon has a thin wall and limited endoscopic maneuverability, ESD
Defective rhythmic metabolism is associated with high-fat high-caloric diet (HFD) feeding, ageing and obesity; however, the neural basis underlying HFD effects on diurnal metabolism remains elusive. Here we show that deletion of BMAL1, a core clock gene, in paraventricular hypothalamic (PVH) neurons reduces diurnal rhythmicity in metabolism, causes obesity and diminishes PVH neuron activation in response to fast-refeeding. Animal models mimicking deficiency in PVH neuron responsiveness, achieved
The prognosis of early-onset sporadic colorectal cancer (CRC) patients remains controversial. The objective of this study was to assess the long-term outcome and prognostic factors of sporadic CRC in young patients. From 2006 to 2011, 8207 patients underwent curative or palliative surgery for CRCs in our institution. A total of 693 patients who were ≤45 years old with sporadic CRC were enrolled as the young group. A total of 1823 patients aged between 56 and 65 years were identified as middle-age
BACKGROUND: IL-18 is a proinflammatory cytokine that plays an important role for T-helper type 1 (Th1) and Th2 cytokine in the presence/absence of IL-12. It has been recently shown that human IL-18 plays a role in atopic dermatitis (AD) by enhancing IL-4 and IL-13 production and by stimulating the synthesis of IgE. OBJECTIVE: We wanted to evaluate the associations of single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) and the haplotype in the IL-18 gene, hence we performed genotyping for the SNPs in the IL-18
The extensive study of genetic alterations in colorectal cancer (CRC) has led to molecular diagnostics playing an increasingly important role in CRC diagnosis and treatment. Currently, it is believed that CRC is a consequence of the accumulation of both genetic and epigenetic genomic alterations. It is known that there are at least 3 major pathways that lead to colorectal carcinogenesis: (1) the chromosomal instability pathway, (2) the microsatellite instability pathway, and (3) the cytosine-pho
Optimal vaccines are needed for sustained suppression of SARS-CoV-2 and other novel coronaviruses. Here, we developed a recombinant type 5 adenovirus vector encoding the gene for the SARS-CoV-2 S1 subunit antigen (Ad5.SARS-CoV-2-S1) for COVID-19 immunization and evaluated its immunogenicity in mice. A single immunization with Ad5.SARS-CoV-2-S1 via S.C. injection or I.N delivery induced robust antibody and cellular immune responses. Vaccination elicited significant S1-specific IgG, IgG1, and IgG2
A ketogenic diet (KD) is known to have beneficial health effects. Various types of KD interventions have been applied to manage metabolic syndrome based on modification of diet parameters such as duration of intervention, macronutrient components, and total calories. Nevertheless, the beneficial health impact of isocaloric KD is largely unknown, especially in healthy subjects. The present study investigated the acute effects of a 3-day isocaloric KD. In this non-randomized intervention study, we
