Professor Geon Ha Kim's research lab focuses on the neurobiological mechanisms underlying cognitive aging and neurodegenerative diseases, with a particular emphasis on the role of oxidative stress, vascular risk factors, and brain structural integrity in mild cognitive impairment and dementia. The lab investigates cortical atrophy, white matter hyperintensities, and neuroimaging biomarkers to understand disease progression and identify early predictors of Alzheimer’s disease and subcortical vascular dementia. A key focus is on identifying resilient aging phenotypes, such as 'SuperAgers,' to uncover protective factors related to brain structure and lifestyle. The lab integrates advanced MRI techniques, neuropsychological assessments, and clinical data to advance precision approaches in cognitive health and neurodegeneration.

The amnestic form of mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) is likely a precursor of Alzheimer disease (AD). Both verbal and visual memory tests are used in the diagnosis of aMCI; however, it is unknown which type of test is superior at predicting the underlying pathologic changes associated with AD.
