Professor Gi Beom Kim's research lab focuses on pediatric cardiovascular diseases, with a primary emphasis on Kawasaki disease (KD) epidemiology, clinical management, and long-term outcomes in children. The lab investigates the rising incidence of KD in East Asia, particularly in South Korea, and explores risk factors, treatment patterns, and coronary complications to improve early diagnosis and intervention. Additionally, the lab is involved in interventional cardiology research, including the development and evaluation of transcatheter pulmonary valve implantation for congenital heart disease. The work aims to enhance clinical outcomes through evidence-based strategies and innovative device applications.

15The incidence of KD in South Korea increased to 194.7 per 100,000 children younger than 5 years in 2014; meanwhile, the coronary aneurysm rate decreased to 1.7%.
The average annual incidence of KD in South Korea has continuously increased to 134.4 per 100,000 children <5 years of age in 2011, which is the second highest incidence of KD worldwide, following its incidence in Japan.

The univentricular heart after the Fontan operation may have a blind pouch formed by the pulmonary stump or rudimentary ventricle according to the anatomy before surgery. Thrombosis in an intracardiac blind pouch of patients with a univentricular heart is a hazardous complication.
