Professor Gwang-Joon Kim's research lab focuses on metabolic and endocrine disorders, particularly in the context of aging and chronic disease. Key research directions include the development and validation of novel glycemic control markers such as glycated albumin for diabetes management, the assessment of vascular and microvascular complications in type 2 diabetes, and the interplay between metabolic health, liver fibrosis, and cerebrovascular pathology. The lab also investigates hormonal and nutritional interventions—such as vitamin D supplementation in osteoporosis—and applies comprehensive geriatric assessment to improve outcomes in hospitalized older adults.

15The conventional glycemic indices used in management of diabetic patients includes A1c, fructosamine, 1,5-anhydroglucitol, and glycated albumin (GA). Among these indices, A1c is currently used as the gold standard. However, A1c cannot reflect the glycemic change over a relatively short period of time, and its accuracy is known to decrease when abnormalities in hemoglobin metabolism, such as anemia, coexist. When considering these weaknesses, there have been needs for finding a novel glycemic ind
AIM: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a risk factor for increased arterial stiffness. We evaluated associations between the cardio-ankle vascular index (CAVI) and carotid plaque, intima media thickness (IMT), and diabetic microvascular complications in Korean T2DM patients. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective, cross-sectional study of 320 Korean T2DM patients without a history of macrovascular disease or macroalbuminuria. We measured 24-hour urinary albumin excretion (UAE) levels and perform
The degree of liver fibrosis, as assessed using transient elastography, was independently associated with the presence and burden of CMBs in healthy, asymptomatic participants. Understanding the link between the brain and liver may advance future research on the pathomechanisms of CMBs.
Vitamin D (vit-D) is essential for bone health, although many osteoporosis patients have low levels of 25-hydroxy-vit-D [25(OH)D]. This randomized, open-label study compared the effects of once weekly alendronate 70 mg containing 5600 IU vit-D₃ (ALN/D5600) to alendronate 70 mg without additional vit-D (ALN) on the percent of patients with vit-D insufficiency [25(OH)D <15 ng/mL, primary endpoint] and serum parathyroid hormone (PTH, secondary endpoint) levels in postmenopausal, osteoporotic Korean
INTRODUCTION: There is an increased demand for services for hospitalised older patients with acute medical conditions due to rapidly ageing population. The COMPrehensive geriatric AsseSSment and multidisciplinary team intervention for hospitalised older adults (COMPASS) study will test the effectiveness of comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) and multidisciplinary intervention by comparing it with conventional care among acute hospitalised older adults in Korea. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: A multi
Pituitary hyperplasia associated with untreated primary hypothyroidism in children is a rare condition. There are only a few reports on this condition in children, and especially when pituitary hyperplasia is accompanied with Hashimoto thyroiditis and growth arrest. Here, we describe an unusual association of pituitary hyperplasia with hypothyroidism and growth retardation, and this was all caused by Hashimoto thyroiditis. Hormonal testing showed a low thyroxine level and a high thyroid stimulat
In the modern society in which we live, digitalization, big data and artificial intelligence (AI) are widely used in finance, e-commerce, manufacturing, and logistics. This trend is no exception in healthcare, and many healthcare professionals have the expectation that digital healthcare, including AI, which produce and utilize medical big data, can help doctors to improve the quality of healthcare services. In particular, in the endocrine area to which we belong, it can be seen that it is relat
BACKGROUND: The role of sports pharmacists is being emphasized in international athletic events. This study aimed to describe the pharmacy services for the 2019 Fédération Internationale de Natation (FINA) World Masters Championships in Gwangju, South Korea. METHOD: Research focused on athletes and coaching staff who received medications after visiting medical centers and pharmacies located in the athletes' village from July 5 to July 29, 2019. We collected daily results of pharmacy operation an
BACKGRUOUND: This study investigated the prevalence of diabetes mellitus (DM) and impaired fasting glucose, as well as their management and comorbidities among older Korean adults. METHODS: Data from 269,447 individuals aged 65 years and older from the Korean National Health Insurance Service between 2000 and 2019 were analyzed to evaluate trends in DM prevalence, healthcare utilization, mortality, and complications. RESULTS: Among 269,447 individuals, 18.6% (n=50,159/269,447) were diagnosed wit
