Professor Gyu-Ri Kim's research lab focuses on the intersection of metabolic health, sarcopenia, and chronic disease development, particularly in aging populations. The lab investigates how skeletal muscle mass and function influence metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular outcomes, with a strong emphasis on novel biomarkers and clinical metrics such as time in range (TIR) from continuous glucose monitoring. Research also explores the role of visceral adiposity and myokines in insulin resistance and myocardial glucose metabolism, as well as the long-term impact of medications like statins on hepatocellular carcinoma risk in diabetic patients. The lab employs large-scale population-based studies and advanced imaging techniques to uncover pathophysiological mechanisms linking muscle and fat metabolism to organ dysfunction.

People can be easily exposed to manganese (Mn), the twelfth most abundant element, through various exposure routes. However, overexposure to Mn causes manganism, a motor syndrome similar to Parkinson disease, via interference of the several neurotransmitter systems, particularly the dopaminergic system in areas.
