Professor Hannah Lee's research lab focuses on cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying intracellular organelle dynamics, particularly endoplasmic reticulum (ER) morphology and function, with a strong emphasis on the roles of reticulon family proteins and their plant homologs in shaping the ER network. The lab also investigates neuroinflammatory pathways in metabolic disorders, exploring the protective effects of adiponectin in hypothalamic inflammation, and examines clinical outcomes in critical care populations, including postoperative delirium and infectious disease responses in immunocompromised patients. These interdisciplinary efforts span cell biology, metabolism, and intensive care medicine, often integrating molecular imaging, animal models, and clinical data.

15The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) is a network of membrane sheets and tubules connected via three-way junctions. A family of proteins, the reticulons, are responsible for shaping the tubular ER. Reticulons interact with other tubule-forming proteins (Dp1 and Yop1p) and the GTPase atlastin. The Arabidopsis homologue of Dp1/Yop1p is HVA22. We show here that a seed-specific isoform of HVA22 labels the ER in tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) cells but its overexpression does not alter ER morphology. The clos
BACKGROUND: The Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation (APACHE) IV model has not yet been validated in Korea. The aim of this study was to compare the ability of the APACHE IV with those of APACHE II, Simplified Acute Physiology Score (SAPS) 3, and Korean SAPS 3 in predicting hospital mortality in a surgical intensive care unit (SICU) population. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed electronic medical records for patients admitted to the SICU from March 2011 to February 2012 in a univers
BACKGROUND: Postoperative delirium after liver transplantation is relatively common, especially due to preexisting conditions such as hepatic encephalopathy. Most studies of delirium after liver transplantation were based on ICU practices using deep hypnosedation. Therefore, risk factors and consequences of postoperative delirium after liver transplantation were evaluated in the light sedation era. METHODS: A total of 253 liver transplantation patients were evaluated for postoperative delirium.
Developing novel anti-platelet therapies is an important clinical strategy for the prevention of arterial thromboses which cause heart attacks and most strokes. Thrombin activates platelets via protease-activated receptors (PARs), and PAR antagonists are currently under investigation as antithrombotics. Yet despite these clinical advances, the importance of PARs to platelet activation during thromboses formed under pathological conditions has not been investigated. To this end, we examined the r
BACKGROUND: Immunosuppression is considered a risk factor for more severe clinical presentation of COVID-19. Limited data regarding clinical outcome exist in adults, whereas very little is known about the spectrum of the disease in pediatric heart transplant recipients. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the charts of young heart transplant patients from our tertiary care center during the coronavirus pandemic in New York City and identified patients infected with SARS-CoV-2. RESULTS: We prese
Adiponectin, an adipokine derived from the adipose tissue, manifests anti-inflammatory effects in the metabolically active organs and is, therefore, beneficial in various metabolic diseases associated with inflammation. However, the role of adiponectin in alleviating the hypothalamic inflammation connected to the pathogenesis of obesity has not yet been clearly interrogated. Here, we identified that the systemic administration of adiponectin suppresses the activation of microglia and thereby rev
BACKGROUND: During the immediate postoperative period after liver transplantation (LT), postoperative bleeding and vascular complications (stenosis, thrombosis) are the two most common complications that require therapeutic decisions. Doppler ultrasound (DUS) is the established method for screening vascular patency after LT during the immediate postoperative period. The objective of our study was to evaluate the impact of DUS performed on postoperative days (POD) 1 and 2 on early vascular interv
The Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation (APACHE) IV score and Simplified Acute Physiology Score (SAPS) 3 include liver transplantation as a diagnostic category. The performance of APACHE IV-liver transplantation (LT) specific predicted mortality, SAPS 3, APACHE II, Model for End-stage Liver Disease (MELD)-Na, MELD, and CTP scores in predicting in-hospital and 1 year mortality in liver transplant patients was compared using 590 liver transplantations in a single university hospital. In
Postoperative ileus (POI) is a common complication after major abdominal surgery. Gum chewing has been shown to stimulate bowel motility and decrease duration of POI after abdominal surgery. We evaluated the effect of gum chewing in reducing the time to first flatus and on oral calorie intake in patients undergoing living or deceased donor liver transplantation. Patients were randomized into the sham feeding group or the control group. The sham feeding group chewed two pieces of xylitol flavored
BACKGROUND: Chronic comorbid conditions are common in patients with sepsis and may affect the outcomes. This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence and outcomes of common comorbidities in patients with sepsis. METHODS: We conducted a nationwide retrospective cohort study. Using data from the National Health Insurance Service of Korea. Adult patients (age ≥ 18 years) who were hospitalized in tertiary or general hospitals with a diagnosis of sepsis between 2011 and 2016 were analyzed. After screen
Diet is known to play a role in the development of skin disorders. While a vegan diet is frequently described as a risk factor for skin disease secondary to nutritional deficiency, this risk may be overestimated. This review aims to debunk myths and provide information on skin disorders and inflammatory skin conditions that have associations with specific nutritional deficiencies in the context of a vegan diet. A literature search was performed for each nutrient and inflammatory skin disease usi
In critically ill patients undergoing MV for ≥ 48 hour, the use of benzodiazepines for sedation, older age, and chronic kidney disease were associated with higher in-hospital mortality and one-year mortality. Further studies are needed to evaluate the impact of benzodiazepines on the mortality in elderly patients with chronic kidney disease requiring MV for ≥ 48 hours.
BACKGROUND: Postoperative throat complications after intubation are undesirable but frequent outcomes. A randomized, double-blinded study was performed to determine whether thermal softening of endotracheal tubes reduced throat complications after intubation. METHODS: Patients (n = 196) undergoing nasal surgery were randomly allocated into the control group and thermal softening groups. Sore throat and hoarseness were evaluated 1 and 24 hours after extubation. The severity of sore throat was eva
