研究室紹介

Professor Hee-Jung Choi's research lab focuses on host-pathogen interactions, particularly in infectious diseases and immunology, with a strong emphasis on parasitic infections such as Diphyllobothrium latum and protozoan pathogens like Marteilioides chungmuensis in marine organisms. The lab investigates immune responses in both human and invertebrate hosts, examining cellular immunity, cytokine regulation, and host defense mechanisms. Additionally, the lab explores public health and policy issues related to military conscription and healthcare practices, reflecting a multidisciplinary approach linking biology, medicine, and social science. Their work combines experimental immunology, parasitology, and clinical outcomes research to address infectious disease control and health system challenges.

Interleukin‐18 Inhibits Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1 Production in Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells
Hee Jung Choi, Charles A. Dinarello, Leland Shapiro
SJR Q1The Journal of Infectious DiseasesOA

Interleukin (IL)-18 is an interferon (IFN)-gamma-inducing factor and contributes to the Th1 immune response. IL-18 added after infection of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) with monocyte-tropic human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) inhibited p24 antigen production by a maximum of 72%. IFN-gamma levels in these cultures were increased, and a significant inverse relationship between HIV-1 production and IFN-gamma levels was observed. A neutralizing anti-IFN-gamma antibody reversed t

Four Human Cases of Diphyllobothrium latum Infection
Hee Jung Choi, Junghye Lee, Hyun-Jong Yang
Korean Journal of ParasitologyOA

Diphyllobothrium latum infections in 4 young Korean men detected from 2008 to 2012 are presented. Three were diagnosed based on spontaneously discharged strobila of the adult worm in their feces, and 1 case was diagnosed by finding the worm at colonoscopy examination in a local clinic. The morphologic characteristics of the gravid proglottid and eggs were consistent with D. latum. All patients were treated with praziquantel 15 mg/kg, and follow-up stool examinations were done at 2 months after t

Of Soldiers and Citizens: Shallow Marketisation, Military Service and Citizenship in Neo-Liberal South Korea
Hee Jung Choi, Nora Hui‐Jung Kim
SJR Q1Journal of Contemporary Asia

The Nationality Law and the Military Service Law in South Korea were changed in 2004 and 2005 respectively to enable tighter control over the conscription of male citizens. This movement stands in contrast to other industrialised countries, where conscription has been replaced by professional and marketised military services. This article explains the Korean exception as “shallow marketisation,” one particular way the connection between citizenship and military service is being reconfigured in t

Korean Journal of ParasitologyOA

In order to assess changes in the activity of immunecompetency present in Crassostrea gigas infected with Marteilioides chungmuensis (Protozoa), the total hemocyte counts (THC), hemocyte populations, hemocyte viability, and phagocytosis rate were measured in oysters using flow cytometry. THC were increased significantly in oysters infected with M. chungmuensis relative to the healthy appearing oysters (HAO) (P<0.05). Among the total hemocyte composition, granulocyte levels were significantly inc

Impact of a change in duration of prophylactic antibiotics on infectious complications after radical cystectomy with a neobladder
Chung-Jong Kim, Kwang Hyun Kim, Wan Song, Dong Hyeon Lee, Hee Jung Choi
SJR Q3MedicineOA

A profound number of prophylactic antibiotics are used after radical cystectomy with an ileal orthotopic neobladder (RCIONB) despite a negative effect of infection control. We investigated the impact of short-term prophylactic antibiotic use on infectious complications after RCIONB.We retrospectively reviewed data from 287 patients who underwent RCIONB for bladder cancer between 2012 and 2016 at a tertiary hospital. The patients were divided into 2 groups according to the pattern of prophylactic
