Professor Hong Sung Hwan's research lab specializes in diagnostic radiology with a focus on musculoskeletal and spinal imaging, particularly using advanced MRI techniques to differentiate between infectious, inflammatory, and neoplastic conditions. The lab investigates the application of novel MRI sequences—such as the modified Dixon technique for fat-signal-fraction mapping—to improve the characterization of bone lesions and enhance diagnostic accuracy in spinal pathologies. Key research directions include the radiological differentiation of tuberculous and pyogenic arthritis, the identification of subtle or atypical imaging features in spinal infections, and the use of high-resolution imaging to detect early signs of disease such as miliary tuberculosis on HRCT. The lab also explores the role of imaging biomarkers in distinguishing benign from malignant bone lesions, aiming to reduce diagnostic uncertainty and improve patient outcomes.

15Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging is a powerful diagnostic tool that can be used to help evaluate spinal infection and to help distinguish between an infection and other clinical conditions. In most cases of spinal infection, MR images show typical findings such as vertebral endplate destruction, bone marrow and disk signal abnormalities, and paravertebral or epidural abscesses. However, it is not always easy to diagnose a spinal infection, particularly when some of the classic MR imaging features
Epidermal cysts show a fluidlike signal with variable low-signal components on T2-weighted images and peripheral rim enhancement on gadolinium-enhanced images. Most ruptured cysts have septa, show thick and irregular rim enhancement, and are accompanied by a fuzzy enhancement in surrounding subcutaneous tissues. These imaging features of a ruptured epidermal cyst simulate a mass of infectious or neoplastic origin.
MR imaging of bone abnormalities, extraarticular lesions, and associated abscesses provides useful information in the differentiation of tuberculous arthritis and pyogenic arthritis.
