Professor Hyongju Cho's research lab focuses on the pathophysiology of airway and upper airway disorders, with a particular emphasis on mucosal fluid secretion, structural and functional changes in the upper airway, and their implications in obstructive sleep apnea, chronic rhinosinusitis, and cystic fibrosis. The lab investigates the role of ion channels, inflammatory mediators like histamine and house dust mite allergens, and mitochondrial dysfunction in epithelial and glandular tissues, using both human primary cells and animal models. A key focus is understanding how anatomical factors—such as tongue volume and Mallampati grading—interact with systemic conditions like obesity to influence airway obstruction and respiratory disease. The lab integrates clinical data with molecular and cellular physiology to uncover mechanisms underlying airway hypersecretion, impaired mucociliary clearance, and sensorineural hearing loss in sleep apnea.
