Professor Hyoyul Kim's research lab specializes in otorhinolaryngology and head and neck surgery, with a strong focus on upper airway disorders, sleep-disordered breathing, and nasal mucosal immunology. The lab investigates the pathophysiology of obstructive sleep apnea through advanced diagnostic techniques such as drug-induced sleep endoscopy and the Muller maneuver, while also exploring novel therapeutic interventions, including pharmacological agents and natural compounds like onion extract. Research extends to the role of microbial factors—such as *Helicobacter pylori*—in chronic rhinosinusitis and the functional recovery of olfactory dysfunction using animal models. The lab integrates clinical studies with preclinical translational research to improve diagnosis and treatment of airway and inflammatory disorders.

Thirty patients (41.1%) had lower airway diseases. There were 8 patients with asthma, 5 with asymptomatic bronchial hyperresponsiveness, 11 with small airway disease, 2 with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and 4 with bronchiectasis. Of these 30 patients, 21 patients (70.0%) were first diagnosed as having lower airway diseases in this study.
