Professor Hyuk Sung Kwon's research lab focuses on neurodegenerative diseases, particularly Alzheimer’s disease and stroke, with an emphasis on identifying and validating biomarkers for early diagnosis and prognosis. The lab investigates the role of neuroinflammation, glial cell heterogeneity, and systemic factors such as blood pressure in brain pathology. Key research directions include the integration of plasma biomarkers (e.g., p-tau181, Aβ, NfL), amyloid PET imaging, and genetic factors (e.g., APOE) to predict disease progression and cognitive decline. The lab also explores neuroprotective mechanisms in ischemic brain injury and autoimmune encephalitis following viral infections like COVID-19.

Young adult IS patients in Korea exhibit low awareness and poor management of their risk factors. Although the short-term outcome was relatively favorable in those patients, having SLE was associated with unfavorable outcomes. More attention needs to be paid for improving awareness and controlling risk factors in this population.
The community management rate seems to reflect diverse patient factors. Efforts are needed to reduce the comorbidity burden and differences in the 5-year community management rate according to residence area and income. This study indicates the need for further investigations into the use of this indicator to monitor the management of dementia patients.
