Professor Hyun Chul Koh's research lab focuses on the molecular mechanisms underlying neurotoxicity induced by environmental toxicants, particularly pesticides, with an emphasis on oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, and cell death pathways such as apoptosis and autophagy. The lab investigates key signaling pathways—including PI3K/Akt/mTOR and MAPK/ERK—involved in neuronal cell survival and neural stem cell differentiation, aiming to identify novel therapeutic targets for neurodegenerative diseases. Using in vitro models like PC12 and SH-SY5Y cells, as well as human neural stem cells, the lab explores neuroprotective strategies using pharmacological agents and antioxidants. Their work bridges environmental toxicology and neuroscience, with a strong focus on dopaminergic neurotoxicity and mitochondrial dysfunction.

15Inflammation generated by environmental toxicants including pesticides could be one of the factors underlying neuronal cell damage in neurodegenerative diseases. In this study, we investigated the mechanisms by which inflammatory responses contribute to apoptosis in PC12 cells treated with diquat. Oxidative stress and inflammatory responses have been identified as key elements of neuronal cell apoptosis. In this study, we investigated the mechanisms by which inflammatory responses contribute to apoptosis in human neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cells treated with fipronil (FPN). Based on the cytotoxic mechanism of FPN, we examined the neuroprotective effects of meloxicam against FPN-induced neuronal cell death. Treatment of SH-SY5Y cells with FPN induced apoptosis via activation of caspase-9 and -3
